WORK PERMIT IN ZIMBABWE
Work and residence permits are required before a foreigner can start work in Zimbabwe. Work permits are usually issued for a period of one to two years and are normally granted on the condition that a local apprentice will understudy the position with a view to assuming the position in the future. Normally, work permits are issued only where it is shown that there is no Zimbabwean citizen qualified and available to fill the vacancy. Work permits are granted by the Ministry of Labour, Manpower Planning and Social Welfare, but residence permits are issued by the Department of Immigration, which falls under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Expatriate status may be granted to foreign workers, but this must be done through an application to the Reserve Bank, since expatriate status, if granted, entitles foreign workers to remit up to one-third of their salary and reasonable savings at the end of the contract period. Foreign workers are usually permitted to be accompanied by their families and are normally provided with benefits such as free housing, free household utilities, etc., which are a part of the contract of employment. |
