Hello Margret. I'm currently living in Chile and analyzing a quite certain possibility to relocate to Montevideo (with wife and 4 kids). I'm in search of some basic information to start with: Cost of living, housing, german/english schools, tax issues and so on. Any help to find some reliable sources of information would be appreciated.
Kind regards, Matthias. |

Hello Matthias,
I don't exactly know the cost of living index in Chile, but generally speaking, Uruguay CLI is approximately 40-50 % lower/cheaper than in Germany, France, Italy, UK.
GDP of Uruguay is US$ 6036
Uruguay has in many instances a favorable tax system, relying mainly on indirect taxes and has strict banking secrecy laws. There is no personal income tax to pay, nor any capital gains tax on property and personal investments. Profits can be freely repatriated. Limited companies pay 30 % corporation tax, but there are many tax excemptions, depending what your company does and whether you register in the Free Trade Zone.
Uruguay is a founding member of MERCOSUR to which Chile has also signed up. I know that Uruguay has a double taxation treaty with Chile and Germany.
As to the schooling for your children, below are good choices if you choose to settle in Montevideo.

Hi,
I'm planning to relocate to Uruguay or Argentina and to operate a business from there. My initial investigations tend to show a nicer tax regime in Uruguay for expats since it seems that only Uruguay income is taxed (i.e. worldwide income isn't taxed in Uruguay).
I can easily get residency in Argentina due to family connections but I'm unsure as to how to obtain residence in Uruguay - that will give me the freedom to operate a business. Do you have any information on Uruguay immigration/residence requirements? Ideally leading to a DNI - so I can also visit Argentina easily.
Thanks |

Dear Mont,
you are absolutely right, Uruguay has the best overall tax advantages in the whole of Latin America for companies as well as for individuals. That is one of the major reasons why there is a sustained increase in all kinds of property investment in Uruguay from the US, Canada and from European sources.
We offer clients, who buy property via UPP, specialized consultancy services at favourable fees, such as extensive tax advice, property refurbishment as well as assisting with all aspects of relocation issues.
If you need specfic advice, kindly contact us at:

Best wishes
the management

Hi Margret,
I may be moving to Montevideo with my wife and two children early in 2008. I'm looking for a rental property in a good safe area close to an English speaking international school (British or American is fine).
Where would you recommend? (Carassco?). I can't find much on the web except for investment / properties for sale.
As I speak zero Spanish, I'm a little concerned as to how I'm going to communicate with the locals. How much English is spoken there? I fully intend to learn Spanish as quickly as I can.
Many thanks,
David |
