WORK IN UKRAINE
Ukraine has struggled to establish a stable economy since independence. However, since 2000 the country has developed a programme of reforms, which has resulted in economic growth - 2.4% in 2005, with 10% inflation (UK Trade & Investment).
Major trading partners are the European Union (EU), Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), China and the USA. Talks have been ongoing following the signing of an agreement on a Single Economic Space between Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
In 2006, unemployment was officially 3.1% (Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO)), although this may be higher as there are large numbers of underemployed and unregistered unemployed people. The International Labour Organisation in Ukraine calculated that, in 2005, Ukraine’s real unemployment level was around 9-10%.
Although some multi-national companies operate in Ukraine, opportunities for work may be rare. Finding work with a Ukrainian company, although not impossible, is unlikely, especially as salary levels tend to be low.
The most likely way to find work in Ukraine is as a teacher of English, through an exchange programme or on a voluntary project. Some opportunities exist for those with relevant experience working for organisations such as the World Bank or international non-governmental organisations. Universities in Ukraine recruit english speaking graduates to teach not only English as a foreign language, but other courses in English. |
