Intro
In the Victorian age, women were treated as mere objects. A Doll's House, a play written by Henrik Ibsen, has brought controversy with the story ends with the main character, Nora Helmer, left her family. This play has had a great impact in the struggle for equal rights for women worldwide and is one of the most performed plays in the world.
ACT I
The play begins with, the main character, Nora Helmer, happily decorates her house for the coming of Christmas. Her husband, Torvald Helmer, has just been promote to the bank manager. As Nora celebrate the good new, Kristine Linde, a close friend of Nora, just drop by the house. A window from her marriage, has been search for work in town. During conversation with Kristine, Nora disclose a secret that she had secretly borrowed a large sum of money without consent of her husband, so her husband could recover from a serious illness he suffered earlier in his career. She never told him about the loan, and has been keeping up with the payment in small installments by saving from her allowance. Kristine was shock to hear the story, and try to convince Nora to tell the truth to her husband. While Nils Krogstad show up at the door, the person whom Nora has borrowed money from, has confront her of a crime that she committed in order to save her husband's life, faked her father's signature on a note, at the time women were not permit to any borrowing. And he threaten to reveal her secrets to dishonor her husband if she can’t help him to get his job back which Torvald plan to hand it over to Kristine.
ACT II
Nora is in despair but at the same time convinced that in his love for her, Torvald will sacrifice himself and take full responsibility for what she has done, if he learns the truth. Kristine hints that Dr. Rank, a regular to the house and a close friend of Torvald since childhood, could be helpful to her situation. Ailing Dr. Rank comes to house after discovering his illness would only spare him a few months of life. Nora answers the door with flirtation kind of smile. After showing Dr Rank her most intimate garment (Silk Stocking), Nora was content her attraction works on Dr. Rank, but when he declares his love for her, she finds it impossible to ask him. Again comes Krogstad, unable to get his job back, left a letter in the Torvald’s letter box, which Nora was not allow to open.
ACT III
Kristine unveils the romance she once had with Nils Krogstad. Carefully, she uses her charm to convince Nils that her leaving him was force by economic reason because having a mother and two young brothers was just too hard by herself. Eventually she plead him to withdrawn the notes he had put into Torvald’s letter box. While opening the letter box, Helmer discovers the letter from Krogstad. Feeling guilt and desperate, Nora finally disclose the truth to Helmer. He became angry and is ready to disown her even though the love for him that presses her to do it. His only concern is his own reputation, not his wife. In the end, Nora knows that this is not the man she could depend on, she decide to leave the house, the family she once had, and to discover what her role is, what she really wants out of her life. As Nora last few lines in the play states, "I believe that first and foremost I am an individual, just as much as you are or at least I’m going to try to be. I know most people agree with you, Torvald, and that’s also what it says in books. But I’m not content any more with what most people say, or what it says in books. I have to think things out for myself, and get things clear." |
