Special purchases include embroidery, lace, leatherwork, Pec filigree work, metalwork and Turkish coffee sets.
Shopping hours
Mon-Fri 0800-1200 and 1700-2000, Sat 0800-1500 (many shops are open all day Sat).
Banking hours
Mon-Sat 0600-1900. Some are open on Sunday.
Currency
The official currency in Serbia is the New Yugoslav Dinar. New Yugoslav Dinar (CSD) = 100 paras. Notes are in denominations of CSD5000, 1000, 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are in denominations of CSD20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 and 50 paras.
Currency exchange
As elsewhere in the ex-Yugoslav republics, the only true repositories of value and frequently exchanged currencies are the Euro and the US Dollar (the Pound Sterling is rarely used in the republic). Money should be exchanged through official exchange offices only. There are very few ATMs that accept international bank cards. There are several money-exchange machines in Belgrade (including one at the airport), accepting Pounds Sterling, US Dollars and Euros, giving back Dinars. Scottish and Northern Irish Pound Sterling bank notes are not accepted.
Credit & debit cards
International credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard and Diners Club are accepted in most shops, hotels and restaurants in Serbia.
Traveller's cheques
Although acceptable in theory, in practice these can be very hard to exchange. It is advisable to take hard currency and credit or debit cards.
Currency restrictions
All visitors must complete the customs currency declaration form upon arrival and declare (including traveller's cheques) money in excess of CSD120,000. Any currency not declared on the form can be confiscated when leaving the country. |
