WORK IN ROMANIA
Work permits are obtained after arrival in Romania but before committing to a Romanian registered employment agreement or civil agreement. Work permits are issued by the Romanian Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, based on a working visa and a review of documents presented by the applicant. All employment related issues are governed by the Labour and Social Security Ministry.
One of the keys to Romania’s recent economic success is a combination of high growth and low unemployment. Unemployment in Romania was at 5.1% in July 2006, which is very low compared to similar-sized European countries such as Poland, France, Germany and Spain.
Annual salaries in Romania remain well below the European average. In the private sector, however, wages are beginning to increase in preparation for joining the EU in January 2007.
With accession to the EU in 2007, Romania could be an exciting place for innovative foreigners to seek career opportunities. Since 2000, Romania has attracted increasing amounts of foreign investment, becoming the single largest investment destination in south-eastern Europe. Growth business areas include: consumer credit; corporate investment and exports.
Foreign job seekers have traditionally found paid employment in Romania through charities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Voluntary work usually involves teaching or working with children. Alternatively, they have also found work via a secondment or posting with a multinational company operating in Romania. Teaching the English language is the best employment opportunity for foreign job seekers throughout Romania. |
