World expert to teach 'most effective self defense system' at Warsaw seminar

One the world's leading self-defence experts will run a seminar on Commando Krav Maga – the self-defence system anybody can learn that can save your life – in Warsaw on August 2.

Commando Krav Maga is the simplest and most devastating solution to common street attacks. Professionals regard it as the most effective defence against attacks with punches, kicks, guns, knives and baseball bats.

The system does not depend size, strength or gender. Its techniques can save your life. It is also an excellent and enjoyable way to improve fitness.

The Commando Krav Maga (CKM) seminar in Warsaw on August 2 2008 will be the first time CKM founder and chief instructor Moni Aizik has taught the system in Poland. The seminar will cover over six hours of training with Aizik and other qualified CKM instructors.

For further information, please contact me. I will be pleased to answer any questions.

NIGHTLIFE IN POLAND

GENERAL

Although Warsaw fails miserably to share in the vibrancy associated with neighbouring capitals it still has its fair range of slick bars, dirty dives and mental clubs. You just have to find them.

As throughout Central Europe, people tend to meet for drinks in the evenings in kawiarnie (cafés) -- where you can linger for as long as you like over a serving of coffee or brandy -- rather than in bars. Most cafés are open until 10pm. But Western-style bars have become more popular, and there is also a growing fashion for pubs. Discos and rock clubs are mushrooming; jazz clubs have a wide audience. Casinos are mainly the haunt of foreign visitors and the new, rich business class of Poles.

Since 1989 it seems every cinema in Warsaw has been showing foreign films -- mainly U.S. box-office hits -- nonstop. These are generally shown in the original language with added subtitles. In the year 2000, cineplexes burst onto the Warsaw scene, providing state-of-the-art cinematic environments.

In summer, free Chopin concerts are held at the Chopin Memorial in Lazienki Park on Sunday and at Chopin's birthplace, Zelazowa Wola, outside Warsaw.

You can find out about Warsaw's thriving arts scene in the English-language Warsaw Insider, available at most major hotels. If you read Polish, the monthlies IKS (Informator Kulturalny Stolicy) and City Magazine and the daily Gazeta Wyborcza have the best listings.

Warsaw's only major ticket agency, ZASP (al. Jerozolimskie 25, Sródmiescie, Tel: 022/621-94-54), is a good source for information on arts happenings. If you speak Polish, call Telefoniczny Informator Kulturalny (Tel: 022/629-84-89), which is open daily 10-6, for information on upcoming performances.

While Kraków is undeniably a historic city, it is also very comtemporary and vibrant. The 100,000 or so students in the city ensure that many of the bars and late night clubs remain cutting edge in terms of both music and atmosphere. Its popularity as a tourist destination means that there are plenty of cafés, restaurants and clubs as well as a wide choice of cultural events.

Many of the city’s bars offer live music, often jazz. These are great places to meet friends or new people. They vary in atmosphere and style from pub-style locals to underground bars in classic Gothic cellars. Traditional favourites are Harris Piano Jazz Bar, U Muniaka and Klub Indigo.

FOOD & DINING IN POLAND

GENERAL

Poland has a distinctive cuisine, with typical ingredients being dill, marjoram, caraway seeds, wild mushrooms and sour cream, which is frequently added to soups, sauces and braised meats. Polish meals start with przekaski (starters). Soups play an important part at mealtimes and are usually rich and very thick, and are often served in cups with small hot pasties stuffed with meat or cabbage. Poland is also a good country for fish (ryba). Pastries (ciastka) are also very good. Table service is the norm in restaurants. Western drinks, such as whisky, gin or brandy, can be obtained in most bars but are expensive. Wine is available but, again, is imported and expensive. The best bottled beer is zywiec, a fairly strong lager-type beer. Bars have table and/or counter service. Coffee shops are very popular in Poland and are the favourite places for social meetings from early morning to late at night. They do not close during the day and have the same function as do pubs in the United Kingdom. Alcoholic drinks are available throughout the day.

Warsaw has a very dynamic and fast-paced restaurant scene. New places seem to open weekly and the choice is considerable. Some of its restaurants have become well known abroad as well.

However, there was a time when a typical Warsaw waiter would tell you that none of the items on the menu were actually available! Another option was a Socialist-era "milk bar" where you were served cafeteria-style, sharing your table with a stranger. Fortunately, those days are long gone. Warsaw now boasts restaurants that make it into European top ten lists - and competition is fierce.

Everything from Chinese to Mexican, Italian to vegetarian is on offer. There are a lot of deluxe establishments, fast food places on almost every corner, as well as street stalls offering hot dogs, Vietnamese noodles and falafel.

Those seeking chic and trendy eateries will find that these are a Warsaw specialty. Restaurants are the place to be seen. One of Warsaw's specialities is its Italian restaurants. The presence of a large Italian business community means that quality and standards are high. Some of the best Italian cuisine in the region is cooked up here.

Whatever you're looking for, Warsaw probably has it. And if it's not there this week, it may well be there next! It's worth keeping your ear to the ground as new places are opening up all the time. Do make a reservation, as many places are almost always packed out.

National specialties

• Bigos (sauerkraut, fresh cabbage, onions and any variety of leftover meat).

• Carp served in sweet-and-sour jellied sauce.

• Poached pike with horseradish in cream.
