NIGHTLIFE IN POLAND

GENERAL

Although Warsaw fails miserably to share in the vibrancy associated with neighbouring capitals it still has its fair range of slick bars, dirty dives and mental clubs. You just have to find them.

As throughout Central Europe, people tend to meet for drinks in the evenings in kawiarnie (cafés) -- where you can linger for as long as you like over a serving of coffee or brandy -- rather than in bars. Most cafés are open until 10pm. But Western-style bars have become more popular, and there is also a growing fashion for pubs. Discos and rock clubs are mushrooming; jazz clubs have a wide audience. Casinos are mainly the haunt of foreign visitors and the new, rich business class of Poles.

Since 1989 it seems every cinema in Warsaw has been showing foreign films -- mainly U.S. box-office hits -- nonstop. These are generally shown in the original language with added subtitles. In the year 2000, cineplexes burst onto the Warsaw scene, providing state-of-the-art cinematic environments.

In summer, free Chopin concerts are held at the Chopin Memorial in Lazienki Park on Sunday and at Chopin's birthplace, Zelazowa Wola, outside Warsaw.

You can find out about Warsaw's thriving arts scene in the English-language Warsaw Insider, available at most major hotels. If you read Polish, the monthlies IKS (Informator Kulturalny Stolicy) and City Magazine and the daily Gazeta Wyborcza have the best listings.

Warsaw's only major ticket agency, ZASP (al. Jerozolimskie 25, Sródmiescie, Tel: 022/621-94-54), is a good source for information on arts happenings. If you speak Polish, call Telefoniczny Informator Kulturalny (Tel: 022/629-84-89), which is open daily 10-6, for information on upcoming performances.

While Kraków is undeniably a historic city, it is also very comtemporary and vibrant. The 100,000 or so students in the city ensure that many of the bars and late night clubs remain cutting edge in terms of both music and atmosphere. Its popularity as a tourist destination means that there are plenty of cafés, restaurants and clubs as well as a wide choice of cultural events.

Many of the city’s bars offer live music, often jazz. These are great places to meet friends or new people. They vary in atmosphere and style from pub-style locals to underground bars in classic Gothic cellars. Traditional favourites are Harris Piano Jazz Bar, U Muniaka and Klub Indigo.
