On the first Saturday of every month from 2 to 6 p.m., local animal lovers meet informally to discuss the care and feeding of turtles and tortoises kept as pets, and the protection of the diminishing natural environments of specimens living in the wild.
Members of the Geneva Area Turtle and Tortoise Society meet in one another's homes and gardens in the towns around Geneva, Vaud, and neighboring France. Discussions are typically conducted in English or French, and visitors are always welcome. Full details of each meeting are listed on the Society's web site at http://turtles.meetup.com/44.
The web site also offers [spam word detected] to all without obligation, and over 150 captioned photos of turtles and tortoises to facilitate identification of the various species. It includes informative articles on how to feed and house different varieties, their interesting mating habits, how to hatch their eggs in incubators, and the best ways to raise the hatchlings.
The Society's founders have also established a Turtle and Tortoise Sanctuary in Nyon, 15 minutes northeast of Geneva. They adopt these animals when their owners can no longer give them the care they need.
Unwanted pet turtles and tortoises can live there in an ideal natural environment, maintained by an experienced herpetologist. Tortoises can roam with others in the lushly planted fenced-in garden, or rest in their insulated shelters. Turtles can join the others swimming in the large water-lily and goldfish ponds.
Chelonians already living in the Sanctuary find life there so ideal that they breed readily. Eggs of a Hermann's tortoise are now developing in the Sanctuary's incubator.
To arrange to have any unwanted turtles or tortoises picked up for transport to the Sanctuary, or to inquire about the Geneva Area Turtle and Tortoise Society, contact organization leaders Suzanne and Peter at PeterSuzanne2@hotmail.com or 022 362 03 60.

Hash House Harriers
Are you looking for motivation to exercise or for a few running or walking partners? Would you like to find a bunch of fun-loving folks to join for a drink? Imagine being able to combine the two - go out for a few beers and for a run. The Hash House Harriers is a running club that meets a couple times a month to run and cool off afterwards with a beer or two. If you like to run (or even walk) come on out! It is a great way to meet people. Our age group is typically late twenties to mid-forties, along with esteemed long-term members who were that age when they started! It is also a great way to get to know parts of the greater Zürich area that you may otherwise not discover.
This year in May we will celebrate 15 years of the Zürich Hash House Harriers. There are thousands of other HHH clubs in many countries all over the world. In Switzerland there are also HHH clubs in Bern, Basel, Geneva, Luzern, and a few others not associated with a particular town.
