I recently heard an ex-pat say the exchange rate is a "disaster" !
Well, it may not be as good as it used to be but, as I said at the time, my opinion is :
Portugal is still a cheap place to live compared with England.
Where in England can you buy a 4 bed, 2 bath, detached house with 1,000m2 of land and a swimming pool for less than €200,000 ?
Also, day to day living is far cheaper ;
Bread, eggs, vegetables, salads, wine, beer all at a fraction of UK prices.
A meal of starter, main course, wine and coffee at €5 has to be a bargain !

And as a bonus you get to live in one of the most unspoilt, under-populated gems in Europe ! Even a flight back to blighty (if you feel the need) is a fiver !

I know that one-offs like white goods and cars are more but all in all I think it's the best "deal" I've ever done !

Any attire which makes women look more feminine gets my vote !
I hate this move towards low cut trousers and short tops young ladies seem to go for. On the majority this results in a "belly hanging over the trousers look" which I used to see a lot on men in East London pubs !!!

I wrote a brief note in May to ask if any people were interested in central Portugal to come to a networking event to socialise and network if you have a business and want to meet new people or contacts. As I provide this service to my network I thought it might be nice to include as many new people as possible.

I have had no replies so I can only assume that there is no current interest or we are all too busy , which is good too.

Let me know if there are any new voices out in central Portugal feeling isolated or would like some regular contact to stimulate the mind and perhaps get the creative juices working!

Happy holidays
We found on the road 3 months ago a samoiedo dog, very dirty and hungry but gentle and friendly. Three months later and many ads all over the Internet and the vets in the area, noone claimed him. He did not have a chip, of course. It is quite obvious that he had been abandoned and spent already some time on the street.

To see him, I can sedn you the photos by email or you van look for Bianca Sesimbra on google, then adult dogs and then Sam. (I cannot post the link to the site here)

SAM is now for adoption at a shelter in Sesimbra, if you would like to give him a home, please call 964423018 (Ana), you can speak English or I can send you the email because it seems I cannot post it yet on this forum.

Introduction

Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986.
Economy

Economy - overview:
Portugal has become a diversified and increasingly service-based economy since joining the European Community in 1986. Over the past decade, successive governments have privatized many state-controlled firms and liberalized key areas of the economy, including the financial and telecommunications sectors. The country qualified for the European Monetary Union (EMU) in 1998 and began circulating the euro on 1 January 2002 along with 11 other EU member economies. Economic growth had been above the EU average for much of the past decade, but fell back in 2001-04. GDP per capita stands at two-thirds that of the Big Four EU economies. A poor educational system, in particular, has been an obstacle to greater productivity and growth. Portugal has been increasingly overshadowed by lower-cost producers in Central Europe and Asia as a target for foreign direct investment. The government faces tough choices in its attempts to boost Portugal's economic competitiveness while keeping the budget deficit within the eurozone's 3%-of-GDP ceiling.
Dear Friends

I am not an expat but wondered if you could help us at the Royal National Institute of the Blind in the UK. We provide over sixty services for blind and partially sighted children and adults and can only do this with help from people like yourself. For more information on the RNIB please visit our website at www.rnib.org.uk

I am appealing to you to send us any used postage stamps that you would normally dispose of. We are deperate for stamps from anywhere in the world so any amount at anytime would be great. We still need stamps from the UK as well. Please could you also tell your friends and family.

If you can help please can stamps be left on the envelope, but have the back of the envelope removed. This will make it cheaper for stamps to be sent as well as saving us a job. There should be approximately1/2 - 1cm of paper surrounding the stamp, but do not worry if this is not possible. Stamps then should be sent to RNIB Stamp Recycling, PO Box 185, Benfleet, England, SS7 9BH. I can be emailed at Puddenhead@blueyonder.co.uk

I thank you for your time.
