HEALTHCARE IN PORTUGAL

GENERAL

Portugal has an extensive state health care system, but overcrowding and inconsistent standards of treatment may make private care a preferred option. Within the state health care system treatment is provided without charge to Portuguese citizens. Private medical treatment tends to be costly, so private medical insurance is advisable.

Note: An agreement with the UK entitles British passport-holders to free care in standard wards of State Hospitals. Other EU nationals must present form E111 when seeking care. The British NHS does not reimburse medical costs incurred in Portugal.

24 hour emergency treatment is available at all major hospitals, but be aware that not all hospital staff will understand foreign languages.

Pharmacies are widely distributed throughout Portugal. They are generally open from Monday to Friday, 09:00 am to 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. On weekends they are open from 09:00 am to 1:00 pm. Addresses and telephone numbers of 24-hour pharmacies are listed on every pharmacy door.

Portugal is considered to have an overall healthy environment with relatively minor health risks for visitors. However, damp chilly weather is frequent throughout Portugal during the winter months, and may aggravate rheumatism, sinusitis, asthma, and bronchial and other respiratory conditions. Local meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables are safe for consumption.
