NIGHTLIFE IN LUXEMBOURG
Although the dimensions of the Luxembourg Capital are rather modest, bars and cafés have been established in profusion. In the last ten years, the scene has developed by leaps and bounds, conquering entire new entertainment districts. This means that you have to visit many corners of the City to find all its favourite meeting places. For this reason, the City Council has decided to introduce a special bus service, to transport those in search of amusement to their preferred district, late into the night.
With the three services of the City Night Bus, it is now possible to spend Fridays and Saturdays "bar-hopping", without being bothered by any tiresome parking problems, tricky alcohol tests or those not necessarily user-friendly taxi charges. Before you take your place behind the "city night driver", you can of course warm up in the bars of the City Centre or the "Alstad", the old part of the City. Some of the most popular cafés are to be found in the immediate vicinity of the Aldringen Bus Station as well as in the heart of the "Alstad". During the summer, the most popular festivities take place here, for example on the eve of National Day (22nd June), followed in July by the Carnival of Culture, the "Rock um Knuedler" and the Blues'n Jazz Rallye.
Between the Grand Ducal Palace and the City Walls there have for a long time been a number of higher-priced gourmet temples or less demanding tourist restaurants, but in the meantime many bistros have been set up to cater for an international clientele. During the summer months, under the motto "Uptown goes mad!", landlords organise a veritable marathon of enjoyment, where joyous customers take part in a draw, through a specially stamped card, to win numerous prizes. A special attraction starts from the bars of the old suburbs. These can be reached by the bus which goes to Clausen, from where a pleasant stroll will take you alongside the river and through cobbled alleys to the suburb of Grund. Here English and Irish pubs compete with the old-established bars of the district. During the annual Blues'n Jazz Rallye, the sounds of Dixieland and Free Jazz blend harmoniously with the hospitable atmosphere of unassuming houses and the gleam of the extravagantly illuminated Citadel.
After this excursion you can take the bus to Hollerich, a quarter which has blossomed in recent years to become the place to go in Luxembourg. Some of the former industrial buildings in the Rue de Hollerich have been converted into true entertainment factories. Five establishments under one single roof offer their customers whatever they want: pop, techno, hard rock – in the "Downtown" building as well as other places in the immediate vicinity no musical taste is left un-catered for. And do not forget the discotheque close to the Bouillon Park & Ride, where the City Night Bus seeks and finds its terminus.
The monthly "nightclubbers'" bible is entitled nightlife.lu and is obtainable free of charge in the City's bars (www.nightlife.lu). Worth its cost is the annually published Explorator (www.explorator.lu or www.restaurant.lu). Additional information on the richly varied night-life of the City of Luxembourg is available from:
