NIGHTLIFE IN ISRAEL
Tel Aviv
Known as "the city that never stops", Tel-Aviv is a late-night metropolis, who wakes up at midnight and runs wild all night long. Jammed roads with heavy traffic and people waiting in line for a bar table or a dance club admission, are common sights at the city's nightlife arenas even around 4am.
Tel-Aviv's nightlife focuses mostly on pubs, cafes and nightclubs, whose House/Trance/Techno music is in one level with that on most European cities' clubs. The city gets amazingly active every night of the week, but on weekends (Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) it's even more bustling.
Camelot, 16 Shalom Aleikhem Street, is stylish (dress up for this one) and famous for great live jazz and rock from Israeli bands. M.A.S.H., Dizengoff Street, is a favourite English hangout for a drink and burger, while sports-TV bar Wrigley, 114 Hayarkon Street, is popular with Americans. Allenby Street is hugely popular for nightlife. Joey’s Brothers Bar, at number 16, is an English pub complete with English beers – and English customers. For something more authentically Israeli, brace yourself for the decibels at My Coffee Shop – Bar 39, 39 Allenby Street, a hectic, fashionable all-day and all-night music bar. Sheinkin Street also hosts a selection of ultra-stylish café-bars – in recent years, this area has also become a fashionable shopping haunt for ultra-hip Israelis.
The club scene will change from week to week and month to month – check local listings to find out what’s really hot. The section of Allenby Street close to Carmel market remains the heart of Tel Aviv’s clubland (though you’d never know it until about 2am). Allenby 58, 58 Allenby Street, Tel Aviv’s most famous nightclub, switches between its original venue at 58 Allenby Street and its summer venue, at Octopus in the Old Tel Aviv Port. Nearby, The Scene, at 56 Allenby Street, on Mondays is the number one spot for young gay Israelis and their friends, playing uplifting house in intimate surroundings. Fetish, 15 Rambam Street off Nachalat Binyamin, draws the crowds for deep house, jazz and funk (especially Saturday and Wednesday). The Dolphinarium, HaYarkon Street, now repaired after bomb damage, hosts FFF on Friday night, right beside the sea. Dinamo Dvash, 59 Abarbanel Street (website: www.dinamo-dvash.co.il), is a small very underground club in the heart of the trendy Florentin section of Tel Aviv. It is considered the place to go for cutting-edge electronic music, with international guest DJs. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night are crowded for techno, funk, groove and trance. The venue only holds 450 people, so it is best to arrive early. Lemon, also in the Florentin district at 17 Hanagarim Street, is an intimate space in vibrant surroundings, with an open terrace. It has gay nights (usually Mondays), as well as ‘over-28’ nights (usually Thursdays). Go further south into Jaffa for Moadon Hateatron, 10 Jerusalem Boulevard, popular with the younger end, this is a vast dance space and bar, sometimes hosting live bands.
Large-scale open-air rock and pop concerts by international stars are often staged at Yehoshua Gardens, Rokach Boulevard, close to the University. Logos, Nahalat Binyamin, features Israeli rock and blues performances every night from 2300.
Jerusalem
Jerusalem's nightlife is a great deal more limited than Tel Aviv's -- seeming almost provincial by comparison -- but some lively spots do keep late hours. Thursday to Saturday, Rivlin Street and the lower half of Hillel Street are packed with noisy teenagers doing nothing in particular. Azza Street, in the Rehavia neighbourhood, has become an alternative hang-out for students.
Most clubs are located in west Jerusalem. At Underground, 1 Yoel Salomon, there have been drinks and dancing as long as anyone can remember. With two rooms of music (one rock and one dance) it attracts Israelis and travellers alike. Haoman 17, 17 Haoman Street (website: www.haoman.com), is still going strong, attracting international DJs and boasting two dancefloors where you can groove the night away to a mixture of house and techno. Hata'asiyah Dance Club, Ha-Ta'asiya 5, is another big club popular with the dance crowd, Fri and Sat are the biggest nights.
Although a wide selection of music venues can be found in both east and west Jerusalem, what is on offer generally could hardly be described as exciting. However, jazz is popular and often very good. Pargod Theatre, 94 Betzalel, hosts a Friday afternoon jam session, while Tmol Shilshom Bookstore Café, 5 Yoel Salomon, has jazz on Mondays and folk on Tuesdays (both from 2300). Folk musicians perform at the AACI, 11 Pinsker, in Talbiya. Pop concerts (both Israeli and foreign groups) are sometimes held at the Jerusalem Theatre, 20 David Marcus Street, in Talbiya. For live rock bands try the downstairs bar at Arizona, 37 Jaffa Road, or Mike’s, Horkanos Street, which has live rock and blues music nightly from 2230.
For schedules of performances and other cultural events, consult the Friday weekend section of the Jerusalem Post and its insert In Jerusalem; Friday's "The Guide" of Ha'aretz's English edition; the Ministry of Tourism's monthly bulletin, Events in Jerusalem; and the free weekly booklets This Week in Jerusalem and Hello Israel; all in English.
Haifa
Haifa does not have as much nightlife as Tel Aviv, or even Jerusalem, but there are some nighttime activities. Check in the Jerusalem Post, which despite its name is a national paper covering events, cultural offerings, and movies throughout Israel. The Friday-morning edition includes the indispensable weekly calendar of happenings, some of which are in Haifa. Better yet, call the 24-hour telephone hot line for "What's On in Haifa" (tel. 04/837-4253), and check with any of the tourist information offices, to find out about special events happening around town.
The student associations at the Technion and at the University of Haifa have entertainment of one kind or another going on almost every night. Check the universities for details. |
