If anybody could guide me in the right direction here, would really appreciate. I am a 20 year old Greek male living in South Africa. Parents were born in Zimbabwe & Zambia. There parents were also born in Zambia (My grandparents). My grandparents parents were born in Greece. Late last year I approached the Greek consulate in Johannesburg to find out if I had grounds for application to the Greek embassy for either nationality or naturalization. I provided the consulate the only information I had, this includes birth certificates of my grand father with his fathers name on it who was born in Greece.

According to the Greek consulate, my family "never" existed or any documents held by the Greek embassy were destroyed. What I would like to find out is, how did I get here if my family did not exist and if not born in Greece? Who can I contact in Greece to search for my great grandparents in order to obtain my heritage? I know I am Greek and I do have supporting documents. I have a Greek surname, and if my family "never" existed, where did I obtain the Greek surname from? Surely there should be laws against this? Can the embassy not do a thorough investigation into this? I would like to go home to where my family started, but I can not because the embassy/ consulate says I do not exist??

The consulate said that there was a way of obtaining Greek Nationality and it would not be easy, politigorathos, which to my understanding means something along the line of citizenship. In this process I have to prove that I am Greek by speaking the language, knowing Greeks etc.

Can someone PLEASE please help me? I will do anything to go "home". I even volunteered to the consulate to do army service, however they didnt seem to take any notice of my choice.
