SHOPPING IN DETROIT

Thanks to the bustle at the Renaissance Center, shopping is not as scarce as it once was downtown. These days, however, you can get the best bang for your buck in nearby suburbs, such as Birmingham, Royal Oak, and Troy.

Farmers and city-slickers alike have gathered in the historic open-air Eastern Market since 1804 to bargain and barter over fresh produce, meats, fish, and plants. Public shopping hours start Saturday at 6 am. Stores stay open until 5 pm; open-air markets shut down around 2 pm, when the stock runs out.

New Center One
