I need some advice from people living in Canada. I am a single parent with a small child. We am looking for a place to live. It must be very near to a very good school, hopefully walking distance.
It must be near other families with small children.
But – I want a place green enough that my child can go outside to play without having to deal with cars on busy streets nearby. I hate row houses with a street in front.
I need to travel abroad occasionally so it would be nice to be near a major airport, and at the moment I am looking mostly in the area of Vancouver, though I would consider anywhere (and cost is not a big problem if all else is right). I would like to rent at first, later buy or build. ( I think we would prefer all the way east, Montreal, Toronto, Quebec, or all the way west, BC)

Finding a community that is both big enough to have good facilities, and rural enough to have lots of green space has been difficult.
We need a suburban community where people are close, but cars are kept at a distance. Can anyone out there make any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dale

Hi Dale,

Being a single parent, it would be a challenge for you to find a job while attending to your child. However, if your child is 13 or so, this shouldn’t pose much of a problem. A detailed background of yourself, your situation would be helpful so I can give you better advise. I assume you are coming here as an immigrant. Are you a mom or a dad?

I am biased for Toronto because it offers more job opportunities than any other province except for Alberta. However, even if jobs in Alberta are at par with that of Toronto’s, it is certainly a lot colder there during winter. Toronto, together with Vancouver are flooded with people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds where multi-culturalism is a key factor in their growth.

We live in North York which is part of Toronto. It is North East of downtown Toronto and very much near the suburbs part. So, we have the luxury of being in the city and at the same time having that suburb feel in the neighborhood.

Houses in our neighborhood have huge backyards where kids play most of the time. My grandchild does go out front to ride her bike but she uses the sidewalk. Nearby, there are 2 parks with play areas and a third with a pool and waterpark which children can use for free with their parents. Our home is walking distance to a large mall, subway, churches, grocery stores, filipino store, public libraries, hospital, clinics, 2 public schools and 2 catholic schools which are tuition-free.

Just for your info, we offer short-term homestay for immigrants. We help new immigrants adjust to their new country and help them find a permanent home. However, we are always concerned about the safety and integrity of our home and are careful in choosing people to live with us. We also have one bedroom available so we can only accomodate one family at a time.
