GETTING AROUND BALTIMORE
By Light Rail, Subway & Bus
Baltimore's Mass Transit Administration (MTA) operates Light Rail, a 27-mile system of above-ground rail lines reminiscent of the city's old streetcars. It travels on one line north-south from the northern suburb of Timonium to Glen Burnie in the south, with a spur to Penn Station. The key stop within the city is Camden Station, next to the Orioles' ballpark. The Light Rail is the ideal way to get to a game or to travel within the downtown area between Camden Yards and the Inner Harbor to the train station, performing arts district, or Mount Washington.
Tickets are $1.60 one-way and are dispensed at machines at each stop. Better yet, get a day pass for $3.50. It's good for all MTA transportation. Trains run every 15 to 30 minutes Monday through Friday between 6am and 11pm, Saturday between 7am and 11pm, and Sunday between 11am and 7pm.
Baltimore's MTA also operates Metro, a subway system that connects downtown with the northwest suburbs. Trains run from Johns Hopkins University Hospital in east Baltimore through Charles Center and north to the suburb of Owings Mills. Service runs Monday through Friday 5am to midnight and Saturday and Sunday 6am to midnight. The fare is $1.60; you can also purchase a day pass that allows unlimited trips on the Light Rail, Metro, and city for $3.50. The MTA also operates a network of buses that connects all sections of the city. Service is daily, but hours vary. The base fare is $1.60, and exact change is necessary, or you can buy a day pass for $3.50.
For information and schedules on all MTA services, call tel. 800/543-9809 or 410/539-5000, or visit the MTA website at www.mtamaryland.com.
By Taxi
All taxis in the city are metered; two reputable companies are Yellow Checker Cab (tel. 410/841-5573) and Arrow Cab (tel. 410/261-0000). For airport trips, call SuperShuttle (tel. 410/258-3826).
By Water Shuttle & Trolley
Take the water taxi -- either one -- for a pleasant way to visit Baltimore's attractions or even go to dinner. Two companies operate water taxi service, and both have different stops. But you can use either to get within walking distance of your waterfront destination.
Ed Kane's Water Taxi & Trolley (tel. 800/658-8947 or 410/563-3901) runs between about a dozen Inner Harbor locations including Harborplace, Fells Point, Little Italy, Canton, and Fort McHenry. The main stop at Harborplace is on the corner between the two pavilions. Tell the mate where you want to go. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under for unlimited use of the water taxi and trolley to Fort McHenry for a full day. Tickets include a "Letter of Marque," a set of discount coupons for area restaurants, museums, and shops. Pick up a schedule for both water taxi and trolley at the main stop. The 13 water taxis generally run about every 15 to 18 minutes 10am to 11pm weekdays and midnight on weekends May 1 through September 1. Service in October through April runs 10am to at least 6pm. In April, September, and October, Friday and Saturday service runs to midnight. The trolley service runs daily April 1 to September 1 10am to 5 or 7pm, depending on when Fort McHenry closes. It runs on weekends only in September. Service always is weather permitting.
The Seaport Taxi (tel. 410/675-2900) goes to many of the same destinations as Ed Kane's, and their stops are usually next to each other. Adults can ride all day for $6 and children 10 and under for $3. For a good value, buy a Seaport Pass and combine this ticket with a visit to the Constellation and a ticket to ride all day on the Seaport water taxi. It costs $16 for adults, $13.50 for seniors, $9 youth 6 to 14. Children under 5 are free. The shuttle runs from April through October from 10am to 10pm or midnight. From November through March, service is offered weekdays 8am to 6:30pm and weekends 9am to 6:30pm. Service always is weather permitting. |
