NIGHTLIFE IN BALTIMORE

Baltimore used to be a quiet town after dark, except for Fells Point's bars or the theatre district. Now it's jumping when the sun sets. The Inner Harbor, Federal Hill, Canton, Fells Point, and Mount Vernon have developed lives after dark.

For major events, check the arts and entertainment sections of The Baltimore Sun and the Washington Post. The City Paper, a free Baltimore weekly, has very complete listings down to the smallest local bars and clubs.

Tickets for most major venues are available at the individual box offices, at Ticketmaster (tel. 410/481-SEAT; www.ticketmaster.com), or at Baltimore Tickets (tel. 410/BALT-TIX) at the visitor center at the Inner Harbor.

The Club & Music Scene

Baltimore has a nice variety of small live-performance venues. Major national acts come to the Baltimore Arena near the Inner Harbor and to the Pier Six Concert Pavilion at the Inner Harbor. A number of smaller, local clubs welcome smaller touring acts and local performers, from rock to jazz to folk.

Bar & Pub Scene

Baltimore has two distinct bar scenes: sports bars, and the Fells Point scene, which includes some bars that have music. Sports fans can stroll into any of a dozen bars near Camden Yards for lively game conversation, but try Downtown Sports Exchange (DSX), 200 W. Pratt St. (tel. 410/659-5844); Pickles Pub, 520 Washington Blvd. (tel. 410/752-1784); or Orioles Bar in the Sheraton Inner Harbor (tel. 410/962-8300).

Fells Point, a combination of pubs in historic rowhouses and hip clubs in old industrial buildings, is a focal point of Baltimore's nightlife and a favourite among the college students and young professionals. But the bar scene has expanded, and Federal Hill's narrow streets have a number of great spots for a beer and some music. O'Donnell Square in Canton is ringed with nightspots. Once you park, you can walk from place to place.

Power Plant Live packs in young singles, especially on weekend nights. Its combination of restaurants and bars includes some old-timers, including Ruth's Chris Steak House; Havana Club, a cigar bar; and Maryland Art Place, a gallery featuring local artists. Newcomers include the Improv, a comedy club; Babalu, a Cuban grill with salsa music; Howl at the Moon, a rock-and-roll piano bar; Have a Nice Day Café, a '70s-style disco; McFadden's Irish pub (self-explanatory); and Mondo Bondo, an Italian bistro. Power Plant Live is up the street from the power plant, north of Lombard Street at Marketplace.

Gay & Lesbian Scene

Along with the Baltimore Gay Paper and its website at www.bgp.org, you can find information and listings for events of interest to the LGBT community at the Out in Baltimore website (www.outinbaltimore.com); and from the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of Baltimore, 241 W. Chase St. (tel. 410/837-5445; www.glccbaltimore.org).

The Creative Alliance (tel. 410/276-3206; www.creativealliance.org) hosts the "Charm City Kitty Club," a local visual and performing arts venue in east Baltimore also plays host to performances by a troupe of lesbian, bi, and transgender performers. See the website for performance schedule and admission fees.

The Performing Arts

Baltimore has a solid range of resident performing arts companies: a nationally recognized symphony; an opera company; a major regional theatre as well as several local professional theatre companies. And now it can boast of two national touring houses: the Morris A. Mechanic and the Hippodrome Theatre at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center.

For entertainment by local professional actors at affordable prices, check out these area theatres: the Fells Point Corner Theater, 251 S. Ann St. (tel. 410/276-7837; www.fpct.org), presents eight productions a year. The Vagabond Players, 806 S. Broadway (tel. 410/563-9135), presents a variety of classics, contemporary comedies, and dramas.

The city's prominent African-American theatre company Arena Players (801 McCulloh St., off Martin Luther King Blvd.; tel. 410/728-6500) presents contemporary plays and romantic comedies.

Everyman Theatre is earning rave reviews for its local productions of classics and new works. It's at 1727 N. Charles St. (tel. 410/752-2208).

The Theatre Project, 45 W. Preston Street (tel. 410/752-8558), is the city's professional company presenting experimental and avant-garde work.

Classical Music & Opera

The world-class Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (tel. 410/783-8000; www.baltimoresymphony.com), with Yuri Temirkanov conducting, performs several concerts a week at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall from September through June. Each season brings classical and pops concerts. In the summertime, you'll find the BSO outside at Oregon Ridge Park, north of the city off I-83. Their Fourth of July concerts are terrific fun. Tickets range from $25 to $75. In addition, the Peabody Symphony Orchestra (tel. 410/659-8124) is a performing unit of the Peabody Institute of Music at the Johns Hopkins University in Friedberg Hall.

The Baltimore Opera Company (www.baltimoreopera.com) has been a tradition in the city for 50 years. Its slogan, "It's better than you think -- It has to be," has helped it create a solid audience. The company presents four operas each year -- always with subtitles. Performances are at the Lyric Opera House, 140 W. Mt. Royal Ave. Acoustics are so good, even spectators in the last row of the balcony hear every note. Ticket prices range from $40 to $150. Perspective lectures are free to ticket holders an hour before performances. Call tel. 410/727-6000 (www.baltimoreopera.com).
