TURKEY SHOPPING PARADISE : Go Shopping in Turkey Guide

DAILY SHOPPING

Shopping in Turkey is a colorful experience. There are numerous options available, such as the: bakkal (small grocery), kasap (butcher and poultry), manav (green grocer), balıkçı (fisherman), çarşı (numerous groceries with fruit and vegetable sellers located at a certain area), pazar (weekly outdoor markets found in each neighborhood), sabit pazar (fixed market found in some areas), super market and hiper markets.

Kapalı Çarşı (Covered Bazaar) and Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar) which are bound to impress almost anyone.

RECOMMENDED DEPARTMENT STORES IN TURKEY

Shopping Malls are places where you can shop without feeling the effects of weather conditions. They all have several cinemas, fast food courts, and of course a wide variety of famous brand stores. Nowadays malls have become a lifestyle. Most of them also offer entertainment and art centers. They are open every day between 10:00 and 22:00 and are incredibly crowded on weekends.
In 2004, the jury of the daily newspaper "Hürriyet", who are decorators, shopping columnists and store managers, have chosen the top 10 malls.

Akmerkez
Akmerkez was opened in 1993 and won "The Best Shopping Mall in the World" award from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) in 1996. This four story mall is located in Etiler on an area of 180,000 m2. There are 41 escalators, 2 panoramic elevators, 246 shops, restaurants, a food court, and cinemas. "Mall Walking" takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 08:00 and 10:00. Akmerkez is visited by 1.5 million people every month. It has its own underground parking lot, but especially on weekends it does get crowded and it is very difficult to find a space.

Tepe Nautilus
Tepe Nautilis is the first thematic shopping mall in Turkey with its name, decoration and architectural features associated with sea and navigation. It was opened in Kadıköy in 2002 and is located on an area of 170,000 m2. The mall consists of 130 stores, and has a smart-parking lot, which indicates empty spaces, with a capacity of 10,000 cars. Cinemaxx cinemas have eight screens. The food court hosts 16 cafes and restaurants offering food from world cuisines. Sports International, which has a sea view, and a baby room are also among the facilities. Concerts and exhibitions frequently take place in the mall. 50,000 people visit Nautilus on weekends.

Metrocity
Metrocity is the first shopping mall to have direct entrance from a metro station. It is located in 1. Levent and opened in 2003. It is among the favorite malls with its four stories, Italian style decoration and fiberglass ceiling letting in the daylight. There are 130 shops, restaurants and cafés including Gloria Jeans and Starbucks. The parking lot has a capacity of 2500 cars. Metrocity also has 32 elevators, 32 escalators, 120 security personnel, 238 security cameras and is earthquake-resistant to a magnitude of 8.5 on the Richter scale.

Capitol
Capitol opened in 1993 in Altunizade, and the inner decoration was renovated including the movie theaters. Music and light shows take place on the pool constructed on the ground floor. It covers an area of 67,000 m2. There are 157 shops, a 14-screen movieplex, restaurants, and open and covered parking lots.

Profilo PAM
The old Profilo appliances factory was renovated and converted into a shopping center called PAM (Profilo Alışveriş Merkezi) in 1998. One-third of the 110,000 m2mall is reserved for social and cultural areas. A 7-screen movieplex with a capacity of 1500 people, three theaters, a 20-alley bowling and billiard hall with 20 tables are among the facilities of the mall. Recently a sports complex including a swimming pool has opened. There are 41 different alternatives of food, from fast food to Chinese.

Armada
Armada is the newest shopping mall in Ankara and was opened in 2002 in Söğütözü. The mall won "The Best Shopping Mall of the Year" award from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) in 2004. This five-story mall was constructed on a 30,000 m2land. Armada offers 155 stores, 11 movie theaters including a 3D screen, 17 restaurants, a children's entertainment area and a parking lot with a capacity of 3100 cars. From time to time, concerts, dance shows and exhibits are organized. Free transportation is provided from various parts of town with 5 minibuses.

Carousel
Carousel opened in Bakırköy in 1995 and was named after the merry-go-round in the center. In addition to famous brands such as Fcuk, Tommy Hilfiger, Puma, Nike, Benetton, Replay and Diesel, it houses a gigantic Toys R Us, Mudo City and Mudo Concept. The ceiling is made of a 34-meter-high glass pyramid. The food court on the upper story is mostly composed of fast-food restaurants.

Migros Alışveriş Merkesi - Antalya
The mall was built by Migros Türk T.A.Ş. and opened in 2001. It covers an area of 50,000 m2and has three stories. The mall consists of 104 stores, 8 movie theaters, cafés, a fast-food court and a parking lot of 1300 cars. Free transportation from the city center and free wheelchairs for the disabled are provided. The mall won the special jury prize of "New Year Decoration of Shops and Shopping Malls" in 2003.

Konak Pier - İzmir
The Konak Pier building was designed by the famous Gustave Eiffel in the 1870s and has been used as French Customs, İzmir Customs, fish market and parking lot. The original steel construction structure were renovated with the latest technology and began to be used as a modern shopping mall in 1998. Konak Pier is the most prestigious center in Izmir with its movie theaters, restaurants and the famous brand shops. It is located on an area of 8,000 m2. A small parking lot is available.

M1 Tepe - Adana
M1 Tepe Adana Alışveriş Merkezi was built on a 270,000 m2plot of land, and is the biggest shopping mall in Turkey with its 78,372 m2covered area. M1 Tepe features such stores as Real Hypermarket, Praktiker Yapı Market, Tepe Home, YKM, Toys R Us, Zara, Ayakkabı Dünyası, movie theaters, restaurants and Crocus Entertainment Center. It is a favorite among families with children since it was built on a single story. The parking lot has a capacity of 3050 cars. Free transportation is provided from various parts of Adana.

GIFT SHOPS

Everybody is in a rush to select a New Year's present for their family, friends and other loved ones. The New Year's shopping is at its peak this weekend and finding the right address is always important. The jury formed by the daily "Hürriyet" newspaper, each of whom is a shopping expert, have chosen the best gift stores in Turkey. Unusual objects, handicrafts, wooden statues and glass designs are all to be found in the Top 10 list.

Paşabahçe
Paşabahçe is the oldest manufacturer of glass in Turkey and serves everyone with its price and quality. Paşabahçe has 26 stores in 9 cities. Design has recently gained more importance in Paşabahçe works and every season new collections are created and put onto the market. The objects bearing motifs from Anatolian civilizations and from the Ottoman Empire are ideal for presents. The Maslak store has almost ten thousand kinds of glass objects. It is open everyday from 10:00 to 22:00.

Mudo Concept
Maslak Mudo Concept is located in a 4.000 sq.mt. area and provides about ten thousand kinds of articles. Among the favorites are picture frames, artificial flowers, red goblets specially designed for New Year's, candlesticks, jewelry boxes, shaded lamps and New Year's ornaments. The objects are imported from 23 different countries. It is normally open everyday from 10:00 to 20:30, however to accommodate New Year's shopping, Mudo Concept is open until 22:00.

Porof. Zihni Sinir Merkezi
Caricaturist İrfan Sayar began to draw on a small corner on the back of the weekly Gırgır Magazine in the 1970s. Today, İrfan Sayar's shop in Taksim hosts more than 60 unexpected products such as a vertical chess board, clogs leaving reverse footprints, notebooks with a flashlight and a comb for the bald. It is open everyday except Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00.

Harmoni
Nilgün Özsaruhan founded Harmoni in Alsancak-Izmir 21 years ago and sells furniture and giftware. Harmoni has two branches in Çeşme. 80% of the products are imported from Italy, France and Spain. French chine coffee sets and serving accessories are among the most preferred gifts. It is open everyday from 09:30 to 20:30.

Poseidon
Poseidon was founded in Atlas Pasajı, one of the famous arcades in Beyoğlu, eight years ago. There are one thousand objects, most of which are imported from Indonesia. Masks, small animal statues, night lamps, dragons, Indian and abstract female figures, compass roses and incenses, candles and lanterns are worth considering. It is open everyday from 09:00 to 21:00.

Can Süs
Can Süs has been among the most indispensable stores in Eminönü-Tahtakale for 20 years. 90% of the objects are imported. The favorite products of November and December are the plastic pine trees and pine branches they manufacture. Can Süs is an honorary member of the TEMA Foundation since it saves real pine trees from being cut. There are more than three thousand objects. It is open everyday from 08:30 to 21:00.

NATURAL SHOPS

According to Evliya Çelebi's Seyahatname there were more than two thousand natural shops, called aktar, in Istanbul in the 17th century, and they sold three thousand different kinds of natural products, herbs and spices such as ginger, clove, pepper and cinnamon.
The jury of the daily newspaper "Hürriyet", composed of specialists on herbs, doctors and gourmets, have chosen the top 10 Natural Shops.

Bünsa
Bünsa is located at Balık Pazarı, Beyoğlu and has been in service for more than forty years. It is famous for its herbal teas, toffee-like mixtures and herbal tablets imported from the Far East. Swedish syrup, mixtures for coughing, stones, cancer and losing weight are among the favorites. It is open everyday form 08:30 to 20:00 and on Sunday from 10:30 to 18:30.

Kırkambar
It was founded in Beşiktaş Köyiç in 1999. Vegetarian food and products of ecological agriculture are on sale at Kırkambar. Natural cosmetics, pickles, canned food and various kinds of herbal tea are also among the products. Honey for strengthening the lungs, nettle seeds and a mixture of pollen and royal jelly are always popular. It is open everyday except Sunday between 08:30 - 20:00.

Arifoğlu Baharat
It is one of the oldest spice stores in Mısır Çarşısı (Egyptian-Spice Bazaar). The herbs are specially packaged. Besides the classical spices such as pepper, paprika, mint and thyme, there are uncountable spices and herbs from sesame to coriander, from vanillin to white pepper, and from pomegranate vinegar to royal jelly. Arifoğlu has two shops in the Bazaar and both of them are open everyday, except Sunday, from 08:00 to 19:00.

Ambar
Ambar is located on Kallavi Sokak in Beyoğlu, and Gülten Kılıçşen took over the shop from her family. Besides natural dried fruits, vegetables, cereals, beans and peas, the store offers every kind of herbal tea. The favorite product is the special tea for cellulite treatment. It is a mixture of nettle leaves, rezene (fennel), horse chestnut leaves and juniper (ardıç) seeds. They say that if you use soap with moss and special massage oil, you will get rid of your cellulite problem.

Ayfer Kaur
About 100 years ago, Cevat Bey, known as a healer among his friends, opened a store at Mısır Çarşısı selling herbs and spices. He named the store after his daughter, and taught the fine points of his job to her. Now Ayfer Kaur's sons run the shop and they sell spices, food coloring and herbs. Spice is their top seller. They say that whenever newspapers write about a specific kind of herb or spice, the sale of that product immediately increases.

Ucuzcular
Ucuzcular is a company of 160 years, and Dilaver Kadıoğlu, is pharmacist and phytotherapist, runs it. In addition to herbs, spices, soaps and aromatic body oils are among the products they sell. Ucuzcular also provides the purest sesame seed oil and almond oil. Sets to cure hair problems are the most favorite products. The most popular herb these days is melisa leaf, used as a tranquilizer. It is open every day, except Sunday, from 08:00 to 19:00.

BAZAARS

Big and sterile shopping malls, online shopping, chic attractive stores lined up on both sides of the avenues... None of them can compete with weekly neighborhood Bazaars for Turks!
Bazaars are set up in almost every district on different days of the week. In addition to fresh vegetables and fruit, clothing, decorative accessories, antiques, stationery and many other things are sold at very reasonable prices. The Bazaars are open from 09:00 until dark. Recently, many stands have started to offer credit card facilities, which also increase interest in Bazaars.

The daily Hürriyet paper has formed a jury composed of celebrities who enjoy Bazaars, consumer columnists and representatives of consumer advocacy associations, and selected the best Bazaars in Turkey.

Kadıköy Salı Pazarı
This bazaar is set in an area of 39,000 sq.mt. on Tuesdays with 1900 stands. The municipality collects 22 tons of garbage in the evening. When you walk towards Altıyol from the Kadıköy ferry port you will certainly catch a corner of the Bazaar. You can find anything at this Bazaar: famous brand textile products, shoes, food, artificial flowers, vitamins from the USA, carpets, white appliances, electronic products, domestic and foreign glassware, china and many more. Some have portable changing rooms and provide credit card facilities. Tours are organized from neighboring cities. There are 6 WCs and a kahve (coffee house), which is reserved for women on Tuesdays. Also gözleme and ayran stands are at the service of visitors.

Ulus Perşembe Pazarı
Also called "High-Society Bazaar" among Istanbulites, it is famous for brand textile products, all of which are certainly fake. The Bazaar used to be held across from Akmerkez on Thursdays, but now it has moved to its new place behind the Dr. Aykut Park in Ulus; transportation still is provided from in front of Akmerkez. There are two portable WCs and two changing booths. The Bazaar holds 800 stands. Unfortunately, it is located on an uphill road and has no parking lot. Most stands [spam word detected].

Beşiktaş Cumartesi Pazarı
It is held on Saturdays on Nüzhetiye Caddesi just across from Ihlamur Pavilion and on the streets opening to the avenue. There are 400 stands mostly covering clothing, shoes, home textiles etc. The prices are reasonable and you can use credit cards at some stands. You can rest at the benches in the entrance and there is a place where you can eat gözleme.

Alaçatı Antika Pazarı
The Alaçatı Antiques Bazaar is located in Çeşme, Izmir together with an open market (halk pazarı) on an alley 1.5 km long. There is food and clothing from nearby villages. The inhabitants of İzmir boast "It is the only open market with an antique market in it. Besides antique goods this market offers plants, fish and even meat. "Antique dealers come from Izmir, Ankara, Bursa and the Greek Islands. They say you can find anything from cufflinks to suspending ceilings.

Bolu Köylü Pazarı (Bolu villager market)
The market is held in the İhsaniye district of Downtown Bolu every Monday. About 600 villagers sell their products in a 1000 sq.mt area. The vendors are mostly women and the products they sell, such as vegetables, fruits and dairy, are all their own production and are grown naturally. Traditional tarhana (a dried foodstuff made chiefly from curds and flour used for making soup), erişte (noodles), butter, pekmez (grape molasses), tomato paste, dried fruits and village bread attract attention. We suggest you carry some change in your purse.

Yeşilköy Çarşamba Pazarı
It is set at Yeşilköy Çırpıcı, Istanbul in an area of 12000 sq.mt. There are 640 vendors with 2019 stands. Tours to the market are organized from neighboring cities on Wednesdays. It does not disturb the environment, since it is not located among the main streets - it is located at a walking distance for Yeşilköy inhabitants. There are toilets and a car parking lot. Food, clothing and glassware stands are set in different places. You can find anything from T-shirts to TVs and imported products.
