Expatriate Forums in Malaysia

I've just been offered two English teaching jobs, one in Johor Bahru and the other in Kuala Lumpur. The salary both have offered me is RM2,200 per month. I'm qualified but with no previous experience. I have no idea what the cost of living is like in Malaysia nor what salary to expect. Would someone please let me know if this is a reasonable amount and whether I can live off it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Taylor,

I personally don't think RM2,200.00/months is enough for an expat to survive in big cities like KL or JB. It might be quite OK if your posting is in the rural areas where the cost of living is very low...but I doubt you can survive out there.
For a single expat to live in KL or JB, RM4,000/month will be a more realistic figure.

where is your school in JB?

Living Cost in JB are estimated as below:
Accomodation (Rent) = RM600 (normal terrace house in near town housing estate)
Transportation = RM250-300 (calculated with an average of RM7 per trip on a cab)
Meals = RM450 - RM500 (calculated with an average of RM15 per day)

Above are those which does takes a big chunk of ur salary. set aside abt RM200-250 for others petty expenses and another RM300 for some basic entertainment.

I wouldn't look at the date either - I normally just glance thru "recent topics" and answer briefly.

the good salary depends largely on your home country
and from which place you came from

2k is good middle average income in JB , and maybe it gives you the
ability to hunt for the job offers in the neibour rich singapore
