Have you considered a self-employed but fully supported opportunity. My post (Optimise) is on this site.

It is:
Fully supported start-up opportunity for motivated self starter. This is achievable, ethical and verifiable.

Today business cannot function without the Internet and this provides realistic opportunities to become established within the global marketplace. For continued growth, I now need leaders to take forward a debt free company, that is already operating successfully in 54 countries.

Ask to see my presentation and look forward to joining me.
True enough Jack. It really depends on one's expectations. We have a friend staying with us from Canada and he is astounded at the prices in KLCC. He expected things to be cheaper here but found them to be comparable to Canada and wondered how people could survive on lower salaries.

One could go thru $15K in a hurry or get by nicely if they budget wisely.

15K and on a shoestring is a bit far fetched IMHO.
But it all boils down to personal situation
A single expat can easily make do with 15K and save a third of that
A family paying for international school themselves would live decently

Now, the job market in Malaysia is not easy, especially for expat.
@greenhiking - maybe you've found yourself a good opportunity, but I've met a lot of fresh grad who came here to look for jobs and left after 6 months having found nothing. The job situation may not be as tough as back in old europe, but as expats there are many hurdles to overcome.

Malaysia is not that cheap in my opinion, especially in kl. 15k would put you on a shoestring budget in the downtown area unless you are sharing expenses and don't plan to eat out that often.

And by the way, if you're paid RM15k in Malaysia, your buying power is much, much higher than 3000 Euros living in France or the UK... No doubt...

Exactly! People seem to forget "cost of living" comparisions when they are converting Euros to Ringgit. Just looking at the amount in terms of figures is pointless. You need to compare the salaries in accordance with the living expenses in that particular country.

A movie ticket in Malaysia is RM12 (2.5 EURO). A movie ticket in Paris is 10-12 EURO (RM 50-60). So who is living better? Just an example.

I'm sorry but I absolutely disagree with what you said.
Yes, Malaysia is a Third World country, but the job market tends to be a lot more robust than the standard might imply.

I am French and have been given a traineeship opportunity in a Malaysian financial institution with the option of being hired as a manager after 13 months.
The salaries are not like those in Europe, but are excellent to live a good life in Malaysia and also an ability so save lots. FYI, I'm a fresh grad from France.

Many Americans and Europeans are now looking at Asia after millions have been laid off from their jobs during the past year for career opportunities: In my traineeship group there are 5 Malaysians, 2 Americans, 1 French, 1 Russian, 2 Swedes and a South African. So the group seems pretty balanced.

To those looking for jobs, don't loose hope: there are many opportunities: but since it's a different market out here, it's very easy for people to dismiss locals as "lousy" or say that there are no opportunities. This is nonsense.

And by the way, if you're paid RM15k in Malaysia, your buying power is much, much higher than 3000 Euros living in France or the UK... No doubt...

Mike7140 wrote:

cvco wrote:

We've been around this topic a few times but the message never seems to stick, like people contstantly asking what it costs to live here and no matter how many times people answer it, the asking continues.

1. This is a third-world country. Its impossible, given the economic, favoritism, queue and racial situation to come here and "look for a good job." The good jobs, if any, are taken. Stop asking.

2. The second answer most often given is that except for teaching English, there are almost no jobs available to foreigners in Asia unless they have been transferred here by their employer already operating in other countries. Read Shell, etc.

3. The above neednt stop an intrepid worker from trying but that means you have to be able to show a local company how they are going to make oodles more money having you instead of a local person. In truth, expertise on your part is only valuable to a company if they can quickly get your knowledge and then dump you, unless you have a firm plan to make them lots of money.

4. Failing all that, if getting a job was the goal, is to start your own company. Starting a company may have been the goal at the start or becomes the goal in the by and by.

5. If you lack capital for a breathtaking new idea or dont have breathtaking new ideas to promote to a local employer, then youve got plain nothing and youre wasting your time and money here.

Agree!
This is 3rd World Country, what kind of "good job" you can expect?
A manager possition in Malaysia averagely has been paid 'round RM7K~15K equavalent to €1,400~€3,000 in Central Europe. (Still interested to work in M'sia?). No employer would like to spend more for a foreigner (European), while vacancy can be filled by lousy Malaysian...

Myself as an engineer has been paid with €600 in M'sia, a so-call professional (demoralising). I was an expat in Germany, paid as a real professional...

Therefore come here to setup a bussiness might be good.

Working as an IT Project Manager at a large american IT co. & have been onsite for a project at a deutsch oil and gas co. for 2 years, now IBM have assigned me to a project for a local bank.

My advice is to google search all the agencies, phone them and supply your c.v., also post your cv on jobstreet, jobsdb etc... (which does seem pointless when no-one replies to your applications). Also contact the HR departments of all the international companies you can find in Malaysia.

I was phoned by an agency who sent me to IBM for interview, I am unsure how they found me, maybe my c.v. on jobstreet. They also bent over backwards to organise my work permit through alternative methods, even when the government rejected the applcation a few times.

3 years on have enjoyed the experience of working here, the pay is much less than what a Project Manager would earn in Europe, but still very high in local Malaysian terms (somehow I am earning much more than local Malaysians doing the same job), enough to rent a luxury condo opposite twin towers and enjoy good shopping, many vacations etc...

Then again, I have to say that it is also in the matter of quality of your work. Where managing is concern in Malaysia, much is to be said about their quality. I have few good ones I used to work for and quite a number of those who actually doesn't know the role of a manager.

This was, I repeat from one of my post, admitted by a senior manager of a large company in one managing class I attended. Not a surprise that they would pay you more.
I am a 33 yr old European (Bulgarian) lady . I have a masters in Accounting and a degree in Law. I have worked in accounting, supply chain and procurement for more than 12 yrs in international companies in Europe. I have been in Malaysia for 2 yrs now and have just acquired a 2 yr work permit. I am currently working in a local company. I am looking for a career in an international professional company in areas of business/ financial analyst or supply chain. I am flexible . I am open to discussion. I just find it very daunting looking for a job here. If anyone has any suggestions or referals, id be so grateful. Anyone know of any consultants/ agents who could help in job placements?
Thanks.

There are some big Malaysian companies who look forward to setting up their overseas office in Europe/America etc. They might be looking for people who speak the local language there in order to spearhead their sales or marketing operations.

Perhaps you can try your luck.

Great post and you hit it nail on top.
On the other hand, quite a few people are not ready [yet] to start their own business. I remember I've been working as an employee for the first 10 years of my profesional life before creating my own company. Kept it till the early 21 century before selling, closing and moving to Asia.
At that moment it was obvious (especially in HK) that the best way to start again was by creating a company and be being self-employed again.
Works like a dream, although without making big dollars nowadays...
Not a problem, as I'm no longer that much of a fan for joining the rat-race.
Nowadays more interested in some good food with a decent wine and the obvious GTs.
Life's a beach, not longer a rat-a$$-b*tch!
