Hey there,

I´m about to start a business internship with a foreign company (SME) in Malaysia for five months, but the company won´t apply for a Trainee/Work Permit for me. They say it´s fine to stay there for three months on a tourist visa and then do a visa-run.

Is this legitimate?

Thanks.

As long as they pay you and also pay for the visa run I don't see any problems really.

Getting the WP can be a real hassle...

Hi JazzMatt,

thank you sooo much for your answer. Yes, they pay me. But this is the reason why I´m asking this question. Obviously foreigners are not allowed to work in Malaysia and earn money. I am just anxious about Immigration controlls by the police... is it likely that there will be one in the company?

I am European, by the way. And the company is a subsidiary of a European company (the boss is European, too. He said a Tourist Visa will be fine and sufficient.).

5 months, means you will only have to do 1 visa run at 3 months. Immigration won't notice at all. If you're talking 5 years then it's a different story.

Your salary is really just an accounting matter for your firm...
