Does anyone know what the braodband options are on Penang Island? I have visited the streamyx site and I don't reconize any of the locations they have listed for Penang - maybe they are all on the mainland - not the island?

Anyway - I prefer not to have to use wireless - any suggestions?

have you checked with PENANGFON? http://www.penangfon.com

i'm not sure the quality of their service but i know that a 2Mbps broadband connection, the monthly fee is only RM60 which is much cheaper than streamyx. the cheapest package of streamyx cost RM66 and it's only a 512kbps connection and their server is often down and slow (i have no choice to use their service as they are the only provider here  )!

maybe other forumers will be able to tell you more about the penangfon.

streamyx is available in penang island..almost everywhere...
because it is part of the national telephone...TMNET..

but for an expat u have to pay 1000 RM deposit to get a landline and if you have a landline u can apply for streamyx...
I made my landlord apply for that...only 75RM

Pengafon...i enquired..and found that they are not in full swing yet...and i thougt it is better to go to a company with estabhlished infrastructure...
maybe u mightnot feel comfortable with the speeds..go test and choose the speed u want..( if money is not a criteria..)

there are 2 wired broadband services in the Penang island, Streamyx and Penangfon.

Basically Streamyx covers almost the whole island but not for the Penagfon yet as they are still new in the broadband. I do not see any problem is you are staying in the northern part of the island especially if you are staying in either apartment or condominium. The charges might be higher if you are staying in a landed property as you will pay for the wiring cost to connect the broadband line to your house.

Anyhow, from the feedback from my fellow friends who are using their service. They seems to satisfied with their serivce and speed. Another plus point for this will be that you do not need to have a telekom landline for you to install the broadband!!

hope the info helps...

Penangfon Broadband

Postby psnevets » Thu Aug 23, 2007 2:18 pm

I just had Penangfon install broadband at my condo yesterday and I found the installation and service to be seamless! All's good for now, at least.
