Many a newcomer have the same question: What broadband to get here? Streamyx? Not only, there are alternatives to it
I use or have used three broadbands providers - here is my feedback (download speeds are what I observed, downlaoding from high speed servers oversea on a reuglar basis).
TMNet Streamyx http://www.tm.net.my/html/pstreamyx.cfm
Leader on the market, classic wired broadband, need of a phone line. 99 ringgit per month including modem.
Download speed: In USJ, I reach up to 80 to 90 KB/s. Downtown, I never had more than 45 KB/s. Given the maximum theoritical speed (1Mbit/s = 125 KBytes/s), the results are bad for the connection downtown.
Pro: coverage (basicalley neraly everwhere you can get a Telecom Malaysia land line), Price
Cons: technical support is pretty bad, it happened to me twice in 2 years to have ridiculously low conenction speed to oversea servers, cost of the deposit to open the land line for foreginers (1000RM) - a deposit you might never get back as it mught get weeks to get back your money, and you might have left the country by then.
Jaring Wireless http://www.jaring.my/
The name says it all, no need of cable or phone line. From 104 to 125 ringgit per month including wireless station.
Download speed: Sometimes over 100KB/s. which is good given the maximum theoritical speed (1Mbit/s = 125 KBytes/s)
Pro: downlaod speed, no need of phone line (no deposit, no credit card required, no payment upfront)
Cons: Upload speed (even after moving the wireless receiver more in sight of the emitter, Inever get mroe than 10KB/s, which is bad when you are a heavy FTP suer or share photo albums). Technical support is very slow. Unable to send monthly printed invoices and their website for paying online is mess. Coverage areas limited to KL ans surroundings (http://www.jaring.my/broadband/wireless_area.html)
Maxis 3Ghttp://www.maxis.com.my/3g/main.asp
An alternative is you need to connect only one computer to Internet and/or need a 3G phone for other reasons. 120 ringgit per month but you need to buy a 3G phone.
Download speed: Sometimes over 40KB/s. which is good given the maximum theoritical speed (384Kbit/s = 96KBytes/s)
Pro: Broadband on the move (if you are in covered areas), Other services can be of use (some like video calls,3G phones work in Japan unlike GSM and you can use roaming boradband in several countries in Europe, HK, S'pore...). I also like the fact that I am able to listen to CNN or BBC in my car while going to the office as there is no English language news broadcasting here.
Cons: Speed (even if they say they will soon upgrade to 2Mb/s). Coverage areas limited to KL, Klang Valley, Penang and Johor. Need to buy an expensive phone. Deposit for the phone line is 1300RM (but anyway, unless you use prepaid or open the phone line under a Malaysian firend name, you are screwed here).
On a side note, I believe in a few years 3G phones will be out of the market when Wimax will be widespread (wich might be in a matter of 3-4 years... even in Malaysia, with Airzed and Nasioncom).
To conclude: if you are used to have packages like we have in France of 20Mb/s for 140RM/month, including TV, phone line and free unlimited call to land lines... you might be surprised by what you have just read. Sorry
Waiting for others feedback on these three or alternatives (NasionCom, MiTV, Celcom, Time???). That would justify the "Sticky"
At home, we switch to Jaring Wireless since last month. the package costs RM499.00 for modem. And monthly is RM99.00
My feedback: Very fast downloading (I am impressed!) and so far, seldom down line unlike Streamyx. Touch wood. Been using Streamyx few years and their down line sucks big time. We still maintain Streamyx account as back-up....pay RM20 per month for 10 hours usage and any usage after this is chargeable by the minute or hour, I think.
My area is about 4 km radius from the transmitter. Thats a plus gain.
If you want to go for Jaring Wireless, best is to ask first where the transmitter is vis-a-vis your exact location.
For monthly service, you need to pay in advance, unlike Streamyx who will bill you after the monthly usage.
Like Patrice said, Jaring does not send billing statements. So if you are heavy user, you just pay them well in advance few months.

You are right Ruk, I should have explained that the price I metionned was including the monhtly payment of the wireless station/modem (24 month x 25 ringgit).
I beleive the fact they provide no invoice is not quite legal in Malaysia, and I would appreciate if somebody would confirm. I am using the phone to make IDD calls, and end up not knowing what I pay for

Jaring wireless is ONLY suitable for net surfing. If u or any of ur family members do p2p (peer to peer) networking... DONT get this one. Its OFFICIAL that Jaring limits (REALLY LIMITS) p2p traffic on its wireless service. This DOES NOT apply to their wired broadband service. I bought their wireless station and returned in within 7 days trial period to get a [spam word detected] (thank god).
To be fair to Streamyx, i dont have much trouble with them since the last 4 years. the only times that i have had trouble were during the massive nationwide down time. Sucky connection can also be caused by chepo modem and router (try looking for Alcatel/Thomson modem/routers).
