Macedonian cuisine is similar to that of Turkey and Greece. Different varieties of kebab can be found almost everywhere, as can dishes such as moussaka (aubergines and potatoes baked in layers with minced meat). National specialties are gravce tavce (beans in a skillet) and the delicious Ohrid trout.

Skopje has a big community of foreign people, mainly due to the presence of diplomatics and international delegations. A lot of restaurants, in general of local cuisine, but the quality is in average medium and the prices low.
GENERAL

Skopje's strict new opening hour licensing regime has forced many bars and clubs to shut down around midnight, taking much of the fun out of it, and placing the city well behind more party-minded capitals in the region. You'll see places starting to empty out before closing time, and at midnight the city is usually as lively as it was in 1958.

SHOPPING IN MACEDONIA

General

Nobody comes to Skopje for the shopping, but if you're here anyway, you might as well enjoy the increasingly improving shoppings scene. Don't forget to buy some Makedonki shoes for the wife and kids.

Found just east of the old train station (City Museum), Skopje's flower market offers a few kiosks selling flowers and plants for all occasions. Opening times vary from stall to stall, but you are guaranteed to find something open between 8 am and 11 pm every day.

At the far northern end of the Old Bazaar area, you will find Skopje's largest and oldest marketplace, brimming with fruit, vegetables, tabacco, herbs and plenty of Chinese items that falls to pieces the moment you switch it/put it on.

A fine bunch of stalls selling mostly edible products including fresh fruit and vegetables, dried beans, spices, cheese and the usual quota of Chinese rubbish, all of it found in a maze of concrete apartments immediately northeast of the old train station (City Museum). The green market also has a few cafés where you can stop and drink a coffee and generally watch the world go by.

Shopping hours

Mon-Fri 0800-2000 and Sat 0800-1500.

Banking hours

Mon-Fri 0700-1900; Sat 0700-1300.

Currency

Macedonian Denar (MKD) = 100 deni. Notes are in denominations of MKD5000, 1000, 500, 100, 50 and 10. Coins are in denominations of MKD5, 2 and 1, and 50 deni.

Currency exchange

All major currencies may be exchanged, but Euros are easiest to exchange.

Credit & debit cards

Very limited acceptance. Check with your credit or debit card company for details of merchant acceptability and other services which may be available.

Traveller's cheques

To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take cheques in US Dollars or Euros.

Currency restrictions

There are no restrictions on the import and export of local or foreign currency.
