Ship wrecks in Beirut:

"The Macedonian"

The "Macedonian" was cargo ship sailing regularly between Egypt and Lebanon. It sank in the early 60s during a strom. During this day, as sailing to close to the shore, the "Macedonian" hit the shollow reefs near Beirut
The wreck is located at 500 meters North of Raouche and several hundred meters in front of the Long Beach resort
Site's Description
The wreck is located at a depth averaging between 15 and 20 meters, which it makes it easy to access to all levels starting PADI's "Open Water" divers and CMAS * divers.

It is divided into two parts. The first one is only wreckage and the second one is the most interesting.

Currents are often strong on this spot and waves are generally high. Diving in this spot is quit difficult when the sea is rough and currents strong. When the currents are strong, one could end his drift dive on "Stingray reef" several hundred meters North-West. Visibility in this area is generally good (during July the visibility is average and some time low).

Marine life is very abundant (as you could see in the image above) in this area. You could encounter schools of fish, Groupers, moray eels and octopuses

"Le Souffleur"

This site is located at 10 Km south of Beirut in front on the small city of "Kahldeh"
To reach this site, take a boat from your diving center. That will take you between 30 minutes. Finding this site is very difficult, so be sure to have a good guide, eather you well lose the site
Site's Description
Divers should be minimum "Advanced Open Water" or CMAS ** divers and a good level of experience is required.

Descent and ascent should always be made along ancre line due to possible currents

The submarine wreck is divided into two parts distant from each other by some meters
The wreck lays at a depth averaging between 35 and 38 meters. The two parts of the submarine are well conserved. An antiarcraft cannon and a huge topedo lay at 150 meters from the wrec

On the botton of wreck's first part, you could spot a cannon and two torpedoes (it seams that one of then is in the launching tube !). The wreck is small, so do not try to go in it. It could very dangerous !

Marine life is generaly poor. You could encouter Nudybranches, Morayeels and some times Stingrays and Eaglerays

"The Alice B"

The “Alice B” is a cargo ship sank during the war by a group of militias in order to cash its insurance policy (1 Milion US $). Before sinking it, militias people took out nearly every thing including doors and cargo bay doors. Hence, “Alice B” is excellent for wreck dives
It is located at less than 1 miles North West of ATCL offshore Jounieh which is make it quit difficult to find

GPS : N 33 59.643 E 35 35.954
Site's Description
The wreck lies on a sandy bottom in a depth averaging between 34 and 38 meters. The visibility averages between 5 and 25 meters. When the visibility is good, the entire wreck is visible starting 10 meters depth !!
There is notting arround the wreck, so make sure to hit it !

This is a excellent wreck for wreck dives as it could be explored within 20 minutes

As it is a “Friendly Diver wreck” you could explore it’s interior starting from cargo bay, going through the sleeping quarter, engine rooms, the main control room, the kitchen and the living quarter. Don't forget to take a light, the wreck will appear to you better

Marine life is not abundant but you could encounter Schools of tuna, groupers, Lobsters and nudibranches

Diving Spots:

"The Sharks's reef"

The "Shark Reefs" or "Shark Point" are located about a 1,5 miles offshore of the Sea Rock (Raouche) and the sporting club of Beirut. It is composed of 5 reefs
Site's Description
"Sharks Reef" is formed by 5 reefs next to each other (the picture above is not completely exact but gives an idea of the position of the reefs), ranging from a depth of 25 to 35 meters, with drop off from 40 to 50 meters. Divers should be minimum "Advanced Open Water" or CMAS ** divers. A good level of experience is required

The site is washed by Southern currents bringing abundant marine life (including marine predators), and constantly renewing its waters. Those currents could be strong and hence one could made drift dives

Marine life is best between April and September. You could encouter huge Stingrays (on reef number 4), Eagle Rays, Morayeels, Octupus, Groupers and the two marine predators : the gray nurse shark and the smalltooth sandtiger. Those two sharks' type could be encountered in July and August. They usually disappear in September and October to come back again same time the year after

Underwater visibility avarages between 10 and 25 meters. Could be affected by currents and plankton

"The Stingray reef"

"Stingray reef" is located about a 0.5 miles north-west offshore of the military beach of Beirut
Site's Description
Maximum depth of this site is 30 meters and dives are done on an average of 20 meters. All divers could access to this dive starting PADI's "Open Water" divers and CMAS * divers

This site is a patchwork of rocky reefs and sand beds. Marine life is not great, nevertheless in June and July, divers could encounter in the sand beds big amount of rays : Stingrays, Eagle rays, Electric rays, Thornback rays ...

This site is washed by strong Southern currents. Underwater visibility avarages between 10 and 25 meters. Could be affected by currents and plankton

"AUB CANYON"

"AUB CANYON" is a facing AUB's (American University of Beirut) beach. This site could be accessed by boat or from the shore (AUB's beach)
"AUB CANYON" was called "Sharks Hole" by fishermen during the 60s and the 70s as sharks were encoutered and caputered. Nowadays sharks doesn't exist on this spot and could be encountered on "Shrak point ou Shark Land"

GPS : N 33 54.369 E 35 28.936
Site's Description
The bottom is rocky, starts at 5 meters down to 25-30 meters. "AUB CANYON" walls start at 25-30 meters and drop to 300 meters. This spot is good for all divers starting PADI's "Open Water" divers, CMAS * divers, technical and enriched air divers (Trimix, Nitrox ...) (be aware walls drops very quickly !! Control your buoyancy !!)

Between October and June, visibility is quit good. Visibility drops during summer (June, August and September). It averages between 6 and 20 meters. Rain and river run-off effect the visibility.

"Halat Mushroom"

This site is located near of the city of Halat, at 20 kilometre north of Beirut.
Le Site
It is a big rock which shape is a big mushroom. It is located at a depth averaging between 35 and 45 meters, which it makes accessible only to divers with good diving experience (levels starting PADI's "Advanced Open Water" divers and CMAS ** divers).

This spot is quit difficult to find. Local divers such as « Xtreme Divers » could help you reaching it.

The mushroom partly surrounded by a beautiful rocky reef, full of corrals and some small gorgonas. A small tunnel separates the mushrom from the reef.
Lebanon is a small country in the Middle East. Until mid 70s, it was a very popular destination for both travelers and businessmen. The capital Beirut was considered as Paris of the middle east.

The civil war changed that. Now that the war is over, Lebanon is getting back on its feet. And it still is a lovely country with ancient monuments, great nature scenery, and the possibility to ski and go the the beach on the same day.

Baalbek is also on your must see list. The ruins are very impressive. Baalbek can be visited easily from the town of Zahle , which is worth a visit itself.

On the coast you'll find several nice places to visit as well, such as Sidon , Tripoli and Tyre. The mountain scenery of Bcharre is great and you should try to find the time to go hiking there.

Don't miss visiting Jeita cave, it's something you would not want to miss.

Beirut:

History

Beirut was built on the largest rocky promontory of the coast the near center of the country. Later it would become capital of the modern nation, but in ancient times its deep harbor and central location were not so apparent and the city was overshadowed by more powerful neighbors. Its earliest name was "Birot," a Semitic word meaning "well" or "source" . When the city states of Sidon and Tyre began to decline in the first millennium B.C., Berytus, as it was then called, acquired more influence, but it was not until Roman times that it became an important port and cultural center with its famed Roman Law School. After Roman power waned, Greek influence dominated in the Byzantine period beginning in the 4th century A.D. Later, the Crusaders held the city for some 200 years. It was only at the end of the 19th century, after 400 years of Ottoman rule, that Beirut began to develop and modernize.

Modern Beirut, which has well over a million inhabitants, remains the cultural and commercial center of the country. Although the city center was left in ruins by the war, business was taken to other parts of Beirut and commerce continued as usual. In the 1990's, however, plans were made to reconstruct and develop this war-ruined area. Over a period of 25 years the project will turn Beirut into a city that is modern yet retains its familiar eastern flavor. Such landmarks as Martyrs' Square, the Parliament Building, the Serail and the traditional souks are all part of the new design that covers 1.6 million square meters.

Extensive archaeological investigations into the city's past are also being carried out under the general redevelopment plan.

Museum of Antiquities

It was a miracle, but although the Syrians and the Israeli used th place as an army post, the collection has remained intact. After the war the museum has undergone a major renovation. It absloutely worth a visit.
Al Omari Mosque (Beirut)

Description: One of the first buildings to be restored following the war, the Al Omari Mosque dates from 1291. In this year the Mamluks rested control of Beirut from the Crusaders and converted the former 12th century Crusader church (Cathedral of St. John) into the great mosque. Note: According to Islamic tradition, non-Muslims are typically not allowed to enter mosques or sacred sites. However, non-Muslim visitors may be able to visit the courtyard gardens and may find someone they can ask for permission to enter. Visitors should be appropriately attired and remove their shoes before entering. Entry is not permitted during prayer hours and not permitted at any time during the month of Ramadan.

Description: One of two archaeological museums in Beirut, the AUB Museum was founded in 1868 with a donation from General Cesnola, the American Counsel in Cyprus. It is the third oldest museum in the Near East and houses a collection of artifacts from the early Stone Age to the Islamic period. Some special collections include the museum s 10,000 coins from various time periods, Phoenician figurines and ancient engravings and clay tablet writings.
Ancient Tell of Beirut
Description: Recent archaeological excavation revealed evidence of the existence of Beirut as a city during Phoenician times. Ramparts and other settlements remains were discovered.

Description: The trendy Solidere area of downtown Beirut has been beautifully restored and is a center for family outings, cafes, shopping, and leisurely walks. The government has paid special attention to rebuilding this area since the war, and today the buildings are magnificant architectural gems, with yellow stonework, arabesque archways, and wrought-iron scrollwork. The cobblestone pedestrian streets are lined with shops selling unique traditional crafts, trendy designer fashions, jewelry, and many other things. There are over 70 restaurants and sidewalk cafes, which are popular places to spend a warm evening. At the center of Solidere is the Place dEtoile and Clock Tower, a popular area for children to ride bikes and play while their parents relax at a nearby cafe. Solidere is also home to several Roman ruins sites that have been uncovered and preserved, several notable mosques and churches, and the National Parliament Building.

Beirut Roman Baths

Description: The ruins of this extensive Roman Bath complex are located just west of the Solidere (Beirut Central District) region, below the Grand Serail. Discovered in the 1960s and restored in the late-1990s, the site contains the remnants of the brick vaults and columns that supported the floors, allowing hot air to circulate. The ruins are surrounded by landscaped terraces and Mediterranean-style gardens. Open air concerts and events are frequently held here.
National Museum of Beirut
Website: http://www.beirutnationalmuseum.com/

Description: Built in 1937, the National Museum of Beirut houses antiquities and treasures from all over Lebanon, dating from prehistoric times through the Ottoman period. Located on the Green Line during the war, the museum building and some of its artifacts were severely damaged or destroyed. Following the end of the war (1991), funds were raised and restoration work took place between 1995-2000. The museum was reopened in 1999. With a rich collection covering an expansive time period, the museum is a “must-see.”

Time zones

GMT + two hours in the winter season.
GMT + three hours in the summer season

Languages

Although Arabic is the official language, Lebanese are fluent in English and French. A small percentage of the population (around 5%) speaks Armenian.

Currency

The official currency is the Lebanese pound (called lira). It is equivalent to US$1,507.5 (as of September 2003).
- Paper denominations are as follows: 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 liras
- Coin denominations are as follows: 50, 100, 250 and 500 liras

The Lebanese economy is highly dollarized and both the Lebanese pound the US dollar are widely used. Major credit cards are accepted in most hotels, shops, restaurants and retail outlets.

Security

Lebanon is a safe country. The war has been over for more than a decade.

Banks

Around 55 banks are operating in Lebanon, with around 790 branches located throughout the country. All banks provide fast cash services, where Automated Cash Machines (ATM) are operating 24 hours a day for withdrawal and foreign exchange. You can use travelers’ checks in Lebanon. Banks change them easily.

Most Banks are open from 8:30am till 17:00pm weekdays and from 8:30am till 13:00pm on Saturday’s. The tellers in almost all banks close at 14:00pm with the exception of Saturday where they close at 12:30 pm.

Electricity

The power supply is much more reliable than it used to be few years back; however power cuts still occur from time to time, particularly during heavy rain and thunderstorms. Many buildings have generators, which cost according to the number of amps supplied.

Within Beirut and most suburbs and villages, the supply has been converted to 220 volts, although some areas of the city still have supplies of 110 volts. Adaptors are usually required for most appliances purchased from the US and Europe. A transformer may be required if you bring an appliance from overseas which operates on a different voltage.

The cost of electricity is US$35 for the first 100 kW and up to US$125 for power consumption exceeding the 200 kW per month. The bills are issued by the Electricité du Liban (EdL), and are delivered by a representative from EdL to your doorstep. Arrangements with commercial banks could also be made payment of bills.

Gas

Bottled gas is generally used in households (ovens and heaters) and it costs around US$9 for a refill.

Water

Water shortages are rare but may occur in October. Water is charged yearly and according to consumption. One cubic meter of water cost around LBP224,000 (US$148). Homes have two water taps, one for domestic use and one for drinking water. However, it is advisable to drink spring water.

Telephone

Lebanon has a modern telephone system. Fixed line service is much more reliable than it used to be few years back and much easier to have it installed. Many private households now also have internet access. The process of obtaining a phone line requires 72 hours. The installation of a local line will cost an initial fee of LL212,000 (US$140) for both residential and corporate clients whereas the set up cost of an international line amounts to LL312,000 (US$206) for residential use and LL512,000 (US$339) for corporate.

Telephone kiosks are rare, but many shops and grocery stores have phones. Post offices have public phones.

Mobile Phone

Mobile phones are very popular and can be purchased from a number of retailers. There are normal lines, which cost around US$75 as connection fee in addition to the monthly bills; or pre-paid cards to be periodically refilled and which cost between US$50 and US$75 as an initial payment plus recharge fees depending on the usage.

For more information, please visit the two mobile operators LibanCell and Cellis.

Internet Connection

Internet connection is available in Lebanon in houses, offices and internet cafés. Several Internet Service Providers are selling pre-paid connection card with unlimited access against a tariff ranging between US$16 to US$22 monthly. Four-digit internet access lines were recently installed by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, giving access to relatively cheap phone connection, varying with the number of connection hours per month (on average 50-100 hours of connection would cost US$32).

Postal Services

Letters, magazines and small parcels are delivered to your door by a postman. Letterboxes are starting to spread in the cities but letters can be mailed from any LibanPost office.

Transport

The road network has remarkably improved since the end of the war in view of the investment which was made during the past nine years on road infrastructure. Public buses assure reliable transportation in Beirut and its suburbs, with fares set at LL500 (US$0.33). Taxicabs and service (collective taxi) operate in all major cities and towns. You will find taxi ranks at the airport, main hotels or shopping centers. Fares range from LL1,000 (US$0.66) for a service to LL5,000 (US$3.3) and LL10,000 (US$6.3) to taxicabs depending on the distance within Beirut. However, outside Beirut, the fares will differ. Taxi drivers at the airport will ask for US$25 to take you into Beirut.

Travel to and from Lebanon is easy. Most international airlines operate frequent connections to Beirut International Airport from Europe, Africa and the rest of the Middle East. The national carrier, the Middle East Airline, operates frequent flights – sometime daily – to all destinations in the Middle East and Europe.

Car Rentals

There are numerous car hire firms including some of the internationally known ones. Daily rates vary between US$18 to US$40 for small cars to US$40 to US$75 for medium sized cars or US$75 to US$120 for luxury cars.

Drivers' License

A valid national license from any country can be endorsed for use in Lebanon for six months (twice only). Alternatively, you can drive using an international driving license.

Recreation & Lifestyle

Lebanese hospitality is known for being genuine and warm. Visitors from many parts of the world are attracted by Lebanon spectacular natural environment and the distinctive personality and friendliness of the Lebanese people. When you visit Lebanon you will discover:
- Casual lifestyle

Lebanon offers a variety of accommodations that cater to the budget and comfort requirements of any tourist. Whether you’re looking to be pampered with five-star service and full spa facilities, or you desire to get off the beaten track and share a traditional Lebanese meal with a local family in a quiet mountain village, you’re sure to find whatever suits your tastes.

*Alternative Lodging (B&Bs & Auberges)

The Lebanese are renowned for their hospitality, but the concept of launching B&B businesses is a new concept to most Lebanese, especially in smaller towns. Consequently, despite the increasing demand by European and North American tourists to stay in B&Bs for an authentic Lebanese experience, there have hitherto been few options in Lebanon. However, the past few years have seen an increase in the number of B&Bs as local ecotour operators establish relationships with local communities and bring small groups to stay. The price of staying in a B&B is typically inexpensive (US$5 to US$30 per person per night, depending on the remoteness of the location) and is usually included in the total price of a tour package to a particular region of Lebanon. Independent travelers can reserve rooms in charming and unique auberges (“inns”).For example, the Auberge al-Fanar (meaning “lighthouse” in Arabic) is a nice, clean inn with nine rooms located on the coast in Tyre. Prices start at US$20-US$25 per person per night including breakfast. Also, a new company, The Lebanon Host (L’Hôte Libanais), arranges B&Bs in private
residences in Beirut. Prices run from US$35 for a single occupancy room to US$55 for a double occupancy room and include accommodation, breakfast, bath and bed linen. Reservations can be made by phone or email.

*Furnished Apartments

Furnished apartments are available for rental on a weekly basis in Beirut and other major cities in Lebanon. These usually cater to people coming to Lebanon for a long-term stay (such as summer-long visitors), but they can also be a cost effective option for families or small groups of travelers. Apartments range from studios to three or more bedrooms, and they typically include fully-equipped kitchens. The buildings usually offer hotel-type services, such as laundry service, housekeeping, linens, televisions, telephone service, etc. Prices range from $150 to $300 per week, and are typically highest in the summer season.

* Mid-Range Hotel Accommodations

Well-located, clean, standard room hotels can be found all over Lebanon. Prices range from US$50 to US$100 for a two-person room, depending on the season and location. Some of the more interesting places to stay include the Ehden Country Club Hotel located near the Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve or the 120-year-old Palmyra Hotel in the city of Baalbek.

*Full-Out Luxury Hotels and resorts

Lebanese resorts and hotels rival those in any other part of the world in terms of service and amenities, and most hotel staff speak fluent English, French, and Arabic. In Beirut, the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel and the Mövenpick Hotel & Resort offer full spa facilities, several restaurant options, outdoor pools, Internet access, and fantastic views of the Mediterranean. The Mövenpick even has its own private beach and rents snorkeling equipment and jet skis. Prices start from US$220 at the Phoenicia and US$245 at the Mövenpick for a two-person room. If it’s a ski resort you’re after, try the Intercontinental-Mzaar Mountain Resort and Spa Kfardebian-Lebanon with direct access to the Ouyoun el Siman - Kfardebian slopes. Amenities include an indoor heated pool, health club, and babysitting services. Prices start from US$150 for a two-person room.
