For travelers whose motto is “to live is to shop,” Lebanon is the destination in the Middle East. The Lebanese have an eye for style and design, and this flare is seen in the wide range of products available in Lebanon. In Beirut, you can find all the famous, cutting-edge designers in both clothing and furniture from all over the world. There is also a very trendy, home-grown echelon of Lebanese fashion and furniture designers, artists, and photographers whose work should be checked out at the many galleries and shops throughout the city. For clothes lovers, trying on the latest outfits and accessories in Beirut is very much like doing so in New York, London, Paris, or Rome. Visit the large trendy shopping centers in the Verdun area, check out the designer stores in the Solidere area, or take a stroll along Rue Hamra – a shopping-lover’s paradise.

Lebanon boasts an eclectic blend of traditional handicrafts, including beautiful hammered trays with arabesque designs, serving cutlery with handles made from animal horn, engraved wooden boxes and furniture, jewelry, pure olive oil soaps, and many other items. In Beirut, visit artisanat shops, such as L’Artisan du Liban (on Rue Clemenceau near the Gefinor Center) or La Maison de l’Artisan (at the eastern end of the Corniche in Ain Mreisseh), for a wide array of beautiful handicrafts. The traditional souqs (covered markets) in the ancient cities of Tripoli, Sidon, and Tyre are also excellent places to hunt for unique traditional crafts. When visiting the different regions of Lebanon, be sure to inquire what the local handicraft specialty is: blown glass, gold and silver jewelry, cutlery, pottery, embroidered clothing and linen, ornate trays, engraved boxes, olive oil soap, and so on. Each region is usually known for one or more traditional crafts that have been carefully handed down from generation to generation.

Music

If it’s live music you’re after, try the Blue Note on Makhoul Street next to AUB, or the bar, Strange Fruit, also located downtown. As its name suggests, the Blue Note specializes in jazz, and hosts a variety of local and international talent. Strange Fruit is a funky establishment serving nouveau cuisine and headlining an eclectic mix of artists, from jazz to local alternative music bands. Head to Achrafieh for atmospheric piano bars. Folkloric music and dance is the specialty of the restaurant Nahr Al-Founoun on the Pont de Nahr Al-Kalb. The Lebanese National Conservatoire performs classical pieces, as well as classical Arabic and jazz music, at the Charles Khater Theatre at St. Joseph’s University. For seasonal big ticket performances, check out the schedule at the UNESCO Palace.

Theater

Theater is making a comeback in Beirut. The city boasts a number of theaters (Al Madina, George V, Beirut Theater, Atennee) that showcase plays, music, dance, poetry and other theatrical arts. The Al Madina Theater in Clemenceau is relatively new, opened in 1994 by a well-known Lebanese actress, Nidal al-Achkar. The Beirut Theater is known for its avante garde approach, interweaving the dramatic arts with multimedia. At all the theaters, performances are in Arabic, French, or English, depending on the particular performance.

Art

Lebanon has long been the center of the contemporary art world in the Middle East, renowned for the eye and skill of its artists. Nowhere is this more aptly displayed than at the Sursock Museum in Achrafieh. The museum houses a collection of modern and contemporary Lebanese art and presents themed exhibits and international collections. If you’re interested in starting your own private collection or just browsing, be sure to take in a gallery opening or view a collection. Beirut’s galleries are too numerous to mention, but Galleries Zaman, Janine Rubeiz, and Aida Cherfan are a few of the well respected.

Nightclubs and Casino

For late night activities, try your luck at the Casino du Liban or “see and be seen” at one of Beirut’s many happening nightclubs. Rue Monot in Achrafieh is a hot spot for clubs and bars and the latest fad restaurants. Put on all your finery and dance to techno house, hip hop, or Arab Latin music until the wee hours of the night.

Beirut may be the nightlife capital of Lebanon, but there is entertainment for the high-energy individual in other parts of Lebanon following a day of sight seeing or outdoor adventure. For example, after a morning touring the ruins of Aanjar or Baalbeck, stop in at one of the Bekaa’s wineries for some food and wine tasting. Increasingly, the wineries are catering to tourists, tempting them out of Beirut with live jazz on the weekends or yoga and other activities. Tyre’s Al Fanar auberge and restaurant has an intriguing vaulted basement reminiscent of a Roman wine cellar or catacombs. Converted into a pub, it is the perfect place to have a drink after an afternoon of sun and snorkeling.

In the summer, there are large festivals extending over several days or weeks in Baalbeck, Byblos, Beiteddine, and Tyre headlining big name acts (both Lebanese and international performers). The festivals create a lively atmosphere in the cities that host them.

Summer is also a good time to try the nightlife on the coast, such as Jounieh, the beach town 21 km north of Beirut, and the Casino du Liban. Broummana, a scenic hillside town with cafés, restaurants, and discos, located 23 km east of Beirut, is also humming on the weekends. In winter, the ski resorts, such as Faraya-Mzaar sal - Kfardebian, accommodate the jet-set crowd.

Smaller street festivals and religious events occur in various parts of the country throughout the year. Wherever you go in Lebanon, there are likely to be restaurants and pubs with special music, ambiance, or hospitable owners with whom to enjoy the evening.

Search our Events Calendar to find performances, festivals, exhibitions, and other events throughout Lebanon.

For the Lebanese-food novice who has never tried mezzes (Lebanese hors d’oeuvres) before, mouth-watering delight awaits.Hot pita bread and a selection of mezzes – hummus (pureed garbanzo bean dip), baba ghanoush (purée of eggplant), falafel with tahini sauce, tabouleh (parsley and cracked wheat salad), grape leaves, lebneh (yogurt dip with garlic) – are just a colorful, savory beginning.

Traditional Lebanese meals are a multi-course affair. Lamb and chicken shawarma (meat which has been roasted slowly and then thinly sliced) and kafta meshwi (ground lamb seasoned with parsley, onions, herbs, and spices) are typical entrées, accompanied by platters of fresh fruit, bowls of roasted nuts, and a tray of bakhlawa (a filo dough pastry with layers of syrup and ground pistachio) or other Lebanese sweets for dessert.

A full, multi-course Lebanese meal can be pricey, but it’s worth it to splurge at least once. In Beirut, the Achrafiyeh area is a good bet for fashionable restaurants serving delicious Lebanese or international cuisine. Try Abdul Wahad for an amazing, if pricey, Lebanese meal. A mid-range option is Istanbuli in Hamra (US$8 to US$20). If you have a smaller appetite, head for a takeaway, delivery, or dine-in snackshop selling shawarma or falafel sandwiches, yogurts, and salads(US$2 to US$5).

Chicken or beef shawarma sandwiches are served rolled up with french fries in pita bread. Falafel is also served in pita bread with a yogurt sauce and sometimes lettuce and tomato. Both the traditional Lebanese meal and the snackshop variety can be found all over Lebanon, with some regional differences and flair.

Lebanon’s café scene rivals that of any major European city. You can spend a leisurely afternoon reading, people-watching, or enjoying the fresh air at countless sidewalk cafes in cities around the country. Be sure to sample the delicious fresh-squeezed juices or a cup of the strong traditional Lebanese coffee. In the evenings, the cafés in the recently restored Central District (“Solidère”) region of Beirut are buzzing with activity, with families and children relaxing, socializing, and enjoying coffee, sweets, and ice cream. It is customary to tip 10-15 percent in addition to any service charge incorporated in the bill.
