hello everybody!!
i'm interested in hongkongers lifestyle.
could u tell me some more about people in hk?
like what is ur rythm of the day? when u going to eat, where u r going out?
where u prefer to live?
i'm prepearing some reaserches about this place and those information would help me very much.
how u will describe character of HK and people which live there, for ex. what r ur expectation , what u like and what do not?
i found already many information on some websides, but i prefer more info from real life.

Hello Martha, welcome to the forum
You might not get much response to your questions from Hkers...reason ....time to HKers is $$$ and they don't waste time on answering or even go on the forum. Very 'realistic, materialistic and paranoid' - work and money orientated and always on the alert incase they get taken for a ride
The people most likely to greet you with a smile and chat with you are: the security guard of your complex, the sales people, the real estate agent, your image in the mirror, some co-workers

As above. Not a really friendly lot. There are 2 recent posts by new comers to HK, you can see they haven't been able to make any real friends yet.
There are some friendly and good people but you have to search for them
like what is ur rythm of the day?
Work, shop and play mahjong ( the table game using small rectangular blocks- play to pass the time, to gamble,to socialize within their circles,....
when u going to eat, where u r going out?
Eating places are always full, so that says alot
Always out on the road, in the malls, in restaurants,
where u prefer to live?
Everyone would like the better areas, but housing is very expensive - so they live where they can afford. Even a little toilet size affordable flat in a good area is in the Millions, therefore beggars cannot be choosers.
But there are rich HKers and they love areas up at the Peak, on the south of the island, exclusive condos up in the hills or by the sea ... it's a city of extreme contrast.

Not a friendly lot on the whole...'MYOB' attitude.
Do not expect the person in the same elevator in your complex will smile to you or greet you 'good morning' ...you can smile but the response you'll get is an x-ray stare right through to the back of you skull
Just learn to 'MMOB' and stare right at the walls of the elevator- the person facing me is a 'robot' with a straight face

thanks a lot for this answer:)
so now i have onother questions.....
the problem is i'm a student of architecture, and one of my exercise is to design skyscraper in HK
can u tell me about kind of hierarchy in buildings... which floors are used for which funktion, or which flats are more expensive, what are HKers needs?
what are needs of reach HKers? what kind of apartments they are looking for, what kind of office they are prefer?
what kind of space they prefer? like more public space or more private. where HKers like to gather, where not, in some way i need tipical sociological info, but not prepeard by sociologist. i just first need to know what is a human behaviour in HK.

1. Martha, 'skyscraper' is a big word and covers a huge array of tall buildings. What is your target - residential, corporate and commercial office spaces, financial institution, hotels and leisure etc....
2. Location of the piece of land and the price plays a very important factor in the design of the bld and it's usage. With land prices on the upward trend developers want good returns for what they put in. Thus, you need to identiify location beforehand tog with the price.
I think you'll need to do alot more research by going into more govt and developement sites in HK to get to know the construction and development first before you can plan what you want to design. I suggest connecting up with HKU faculty of Archit. to further your research and gather more relative information eg:

thanks for this information, they will realy help me.
well, i know that topic is difficult, and i already gatherd some information about this, begining with climate and finishing with political and sociological information.
the area where my exercise should be made is Tamar.
i've read a lot of information about reclamation in HK and aboout governament plans for this area, so a i have some basic.
i just decided that my frame work will be human behaviour, that's why i'm asking about this.
do u like skyscrapers? like using them? working there? what u don,t like in skyscrapers?

No, don't like skyscrappers at all
ok they look nice from a distance and each one gives the city its characteristics, but closer the city is just another concrete jungle...unless there are lots of green spaces between each structure...but then again the purpose is for space saving and compacting the city, bec land is expensive so the green spaces(lungs) is an added cost.
Just look at the IFC close by - it's so phalic and ugly
I don't like to live in one nor work in one if I can help it. Luckily HK is not in a quake zone.
I was living in one just the 17th floor up the side of the hillside on HK island...very good view and area. But, when the elec power to the elavators were disrupted a few times I had to climb all the way down and later all the way up. With the stairs being narrow, the narrow space is really dangerous as people (adults and school children) were going both directions. So you can imagine if there's a fire or a real emergency situation, some people do panic easily, that narrow space can be a death trap... if some older folks fainted in that stairwell, the others will not have sufficient room to manouver and there could be a stampede... just a nightmare!
Another thing I always wonder, if the fire dept water jet is sufficient to reach the height of those tall structures

Even more so come January
Personally i think Tamar should be left alone. There are only a few days left until the Star Ferry building in Central is destroyed now that they've been shifted to the "Outlaying Island's Pier Reclamation" making HK Island officially Outlaying
If your remit is to design a "Skyscrapper" for Tamer the build it with the biggest ever hole right through the centre...... to let the dragon out, like the one in Stanley

Scooby, you mean with that big fat bonus

I wonder if that'd be just temporary,any idea ?

Or to let the good dragon in, channeling wealth into HK
Martha, remember to consult a reputable "Fung Shiu" master with regards to the design of the "Skyscrapper" as Scooby said about the 'big square hole' of that building in Stanley. You'll be surprised how superstitious even the corporate world is in HK eg the design of the Bank of China with it's 'knife-like' design like a verticle sword rising from the ground ... some significance there. Same with that 'phalic' design of the IFC
