FOOD & DINING IN ESTONIA

GENERAL

Tallinn’s tourist boom has been both good and bad for the local dining scene. On one hand, there are more decent, high-quality restaurants and cafés opening up every month. Inevitably, there are also more tourist traps taking advantage of the feeding frenzy - Viru street and Town Hall Square are particularly notorious in this regard. Even with all this development, there’s still good value for money and it’s not hard to find a full meal for €6 - 8. Service is nearly always English-speaking and foreign-language menus are the rule, although the words are not always spelled correctly. VAT (18%) is always included and service is never added to the bill.

Traditional Estonian food has its roots firmly in the countryside, relying heavily on pork, potatoes and garden variety vegetables. The main culinary influences were from Germans, who ruled over Estonia for so many centuries. Hors d'oeuvres are very good and often the best part of the meal.

The Estonian restaurant scene is now amazingly diverse, especially in Tallinn. There are Indian, Tex-Mex, Thai and Georgian restaurants, as well as Hungarian, Japanese, Chinese and Greek ones.

• Täidetud vasikarind (roast stuffed shoulder of veal).

• Estonian wild mushroom soup.
