For anyone like myself who left Canada because of the cold. The DR has a great climate and reasonable cost of living. I sailed to the island some 6 years ago. I found the people friendly. It took me a little while to make the adjustments to language, customs and beliefs. If you are on a small pension you can live here very well. I built a two-bedroom house with a two-bedroom apartment above on a pension that in Canada would be very hard to live on and probably needed a part time job. I live in the countryside where it is very quiet and secure. Medical insurance for my wife and me is about US$ 500 per year. Most prescription medicine can be bought across the counter without a prescription. Lots of the taxes that I put up with in Canada don’t exist here. A small piece of land will give you three crops a year and where I live everything seem to grow well.
If any expats are thinking of moving her and have any question I will do my best to help.

Thomas if you have a pension or can work for a company that pays a good wage it’s great. Working for Dominican wages is not very good. The average wage for unskilled worker is equal toU.S. $100 per month.

Please, if you can help me find a few acres of land in a safe area for gringos who just want to build a small place to live and have gardens and a few farm animals to live a sustainance life-on-land. Any tips appreciated!  |

Yes I can help you find some land. It would be a good idea to come and see the land before making up your mind. Most all the country is gringo friendly I have not heard of many problems. The few have heard of have been created by the gringos. I have gringo friends here doing exactly what you would like to do.

Hi Doug,
If you don't mind, I'll take you up on your offer to assist potential expats about DR info. Please fasten your seatbelt as I'm about to bore you with some details.
I'm an Australian currently living & working in Thailand...have been here for about 2 years. I am not retired, nor am I of retiring age (46). I've recently decided to think about changing countries due to the growing government unfriendliness toward expats in Thailand.
After browsing the web, I discovered DR
I currently teach English at a Technical College but otherwise, I'm an electrician/electrical engineer (no degree). If possible, I would like to avoid the possibility of teaching...I'm good at it but it doesn't keep me stimulated.
My previous position in Australia was in Facilities Management (building maintenance) & I was a switchboard design engineer for about 10 years prior to that.
Also, about 7 years ago, I lived in Argentina for about 1 year, so I know a tiny bit of Spanish.
I'm looking for 'quality of life' & not money (even though I don't have any  )...& I don't like cold weather.
From what I've read on the internet, DR sounds like a fine place to settle. Is it true that workpermits are not required for foreigners?
I'm looking to make my move in about 1 year, when my teaching contract finishes. This will hopefully give me enough time to gain more info on DR & save some money.
Any advice appreciated.

Rob if you are an electrical engineer and would like to work in that field. The DR has a lot of problems with the electricity most homes [middle class and up] have inverters and voltage regulators so they need good people. If would probably help to brush up on your Spanish. They are pretty layback about foreigners working here and I have found the people very friendly. As a foreigner they will try and take advantage of you but if you have traveled around you are probably aware of this.
When you get here come by and visit.

Thailand sounds similar to the DR in that people are very friendly here but they do have this "all foreigners are rich" attitude & subsequently try to take advantage. There are 2 things about Thailand that annoy me; the incredibly stupid government & cultural inflexibility.
Thailand has a similar low quality electrical system to DR by the sounds of it. I've actually spent about 1 year helping foreigners (for free) wire their houses safely, since Thai electricians are useless. A friend of mine put most of my documentation on his website if you're interested. I also realise that the DR uses American Electrical design, about which I am partially familiar.
Anyway, are you able to suggest an employment agency (or 2), to which I can send my details? Could you suggest a good city/location in which to initially live?
