I hope you will not be annoyed at stupid government here and the cultural issues here there is a lot of myths in their beliefs system.
As a retired person I have not looked for employment agencies but will look for information for you and PM you any information I get.
As far as a city to live in, it will be your choice the large cities Santo Domingo and Santiago are crowded and noisy but probably offer opportunity for work. There is also Sosua and Caberetta whom have a large retired expatriate community. These people have money and looking for skilled help.

I'm wondering about what might be a decent monthly income in US dollars for someone thinking about retiring to the Dominican Republic? We got one kid left to get through school and after that, we're going to be free and clear to go pretty much anywhere. I have side businesses managing, maintaining, and hosting a number of web sites (along with some general nature, scenic, sports, industrial, and event type photography). Besides Social Security (for whatever that's going to be worth) I'll have some proceeds from a 401k and we have a house here we will probably sell. I'll expect we'd probably be working — self-employed — which is probably what I'd want to do, anyway. Thanks, in advance, for whatever input/advice you might have. |

Depends on the life stile you wish to live. I myself live on $1500 per month and live very comfortable in the countryside. I have all the conveniences that I need and equal to what I would have had in Canada. I even built a two-bedroom house on that money. I have friends living here that get $800 a month and do well.
If you want to be in the tourist areas expect to pay a lot more.

No, I think we'd actually rather prefer being away from the touristy areas. I'm thinking we'd probably have around a couple thousand/month, as things stand now, but could add to that by adding more clients. One thing I wonder about would be the communications/network infrastructure available. You obviously have it where you are, but that's a consideration. Of course we're talking a move that would not happen for another 8 years, or so. Just doing some long term thinking, here.

In eight years I think a lot will change here as far as internet conection. Now I'm getting internet via a cell phone and not that fast. This is one problem with living in the countryside.

Hey Bat...
Sell the kid, move now. You can probably get a nice chunk of land for him =)
On another note, with technology just catching up, what are the schools like and what could someone expect if there were taking a teaching position in the DR? |

The education system could use lots of help here if you’re a teacher I would home school your children. There is a good university here in Santo Domingo. The average public school is sub standard. I think you could find private schools in the larger cities

| hi doug, you are from canada, which province? i am from ontario, 51 years old, i understand that 1500-2000 is well enough for retirement there, which part of the dominican is the country? what would you figure is the amount to deposit into the dominican bank to get 1500-2000 in interest per month? yeah, i would like to get out of the cold, gland to hear your doing well there, thanks, duwight |

I live in St Thomas Ontario most of my life. You can survive on 500 per month on 1,000 live but no extras 1,500 live comfortable 2000 you can build a house with a few extras. This apply only to the countryside and not tourist areas. I live about 5 miles from the north coast near Luperon. I would leave your money in Canada and just use what you need here. I have seen the dollar here change dramatically from 15 paso to 1dollar 50 to 1 so if you had money you could of had a big loss. I personal think it's a perfect place to retire but be careful who you trust. There is many horror stories here of people who trusted the wrong people after saying that the average Dominican are honest hard workers and very helpful. Where you have a lot of gringos you also have the people who pray on them. If I can help PM me.

| hi doug, i'm about 2 hours north east of st. thomas. banks here are not paying much interest, peso looks good at around 10-15 percent interest for a cd, are you familiar with the banco cd? how long did it take to build your house? any ideas on how much it would cost to build a 1200 sq. ft. bungalow. obviously alot less than buying a standing house. just had a cold snap here for a few days, -20 to -29 c. burrrrr, thanks, duwight |
