Expatriate Forums in Dominican Republic

I really like hawaii, but can only live there for six months, so have considered the Dominican Republic. I am Canadian, and will retire in six months with half of a pension (due to divorce). I don't speak Spanish. I cannot stand the idea of another Vancouver winter of rain, I am a warm weather, beach guy. I am planning on coming to the DR in December or January. Can you tell me where I can still find good deals in property (I want a small house...preferably ocean view or close to the ocean; but where I can have a garden and do landscaping.
The things I like about Hawaii are the lack of bugs (especially no mosquitoes) and good drinking water, and pretty safe (if you are reasonably careful). How does the DR compare in these areas.
I was looking at Punta Cana a year ago on the web, and see that it is really expensive now. Is Cabarete area still reasonable.

Welcome to the board from a fellow Canadian. Most of the tourist areas are getting very expensive. If you have patience and look around outside these areas there are bargains. If you are looking for a basic house you can have one built very reasonably.
There are mosquitoes and most people buy drinking water. I personally have screened windows and catch rainwater for drinking. When I came here 7 years ago I could not speak Spanish.
PS there is a lot of young beautiful women here looking for a husband.
