If you go to a country on vacation you should see the country not a canned version. Most vacation trips are to all-inclusive resorts and if they have tourist trips out side they are guided trips and only go where they decide. Most of the people wanting to take advantage of you are based near the tourist areas. Next time you visit the DR rent a car or motorcycle [referable not new or shinny as you will be looked a pone as a meal ticket] go out into the countryside stopping at the small [carmados] small restaurant you will be surprised at these quiet beautiful friendly people. The countryside is quite safe if you remember [DO NOT be over generous and show off you money] as the average person there makes less in a week than you give tip in the US. If you stop and talk to the people living along side of the back roads you will probable get an invite to dinner. Even if they go hungry they will always find some for you. This country is very laid back and relaxing a great opportunity to have the vacation you promised yourself.
