Hi, Happy New Year to all.
I have not posted on this site for a long time. I have been to Hawaii to look at retirement options (love the Islands, but can only go for 6 months as I am Canadian). I also went to Thailand (and am going again in a few weeks). I was seriously considering Thailand, but....foreigners cannot buy land (only some condo purchases at 50% of the building). Plus, even the new retirement visa requires 90 day check ins at the Government, etc.
So, am now back looking at my original choice of DR. I am now officially retired with a pension, and have ended spousal support payments...so know my budget. I am now getting to my question.....slowly. First, a few points. I see that real estate in Hawaii has dropped about 25 to 30% (with a glut of unsold condos). In Thailand, the market is the same. Hundreds of beautiful homes and condos sitting unsold with prices dropping.
I heard that some developments in Punta Cana were failing. So my question is..... Is this a good time to find bargains in the DR. Again, I am looking for a nice house (villa) with sea views and a pool (this is my dream anyway). I am interested in the Caberete, Sosua area. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am planning now to come in the Spring.
cheers
