NIGHTLIFE IN CZECH REPUBLIC

GENERAL

Prague’s bar and club scene is as appropriately raucaus as its infamy suggests. Prices and clientele veer widely from the tourist-filled Old Town haunts to the sometimes slightly seedy neighbourhood bars. You will find that beer is drunk morning, noon and night, and that Czech beers are among the best and cheapest in the world. Brands to look out for include Pilsner Urquell, Gambrinus, Staropramen and Budweiser (Budvar).

The Old Town & New Town are the well-touristed area between the Vltava river and busy Wilsonova road, along in front of the National Museum.

Malá Strana and the area around the castle is a cleaner version of the Old Town, with some great bars and jazz clubs, but little in the way of a club scene. To get there, simply walk across Charles Bridge, take the metro to Malostranská or hop on trams N°18, 22 or 23. Crawl onto night tram N°57 to get back to the Old Town.

Loved by young expats, Vinohrady has trendy bars, a top-class beer garden and one of Europe’s best clubs. Neighbouring Žižkov is Vinohrady’s scummy little brother, a working-class district that’s proud of the number of places serving alcohol - the highest concentration in the country. Vinohrady is best explored from the Jiřího z Poděbrad (JzP), Náměstí Míru or I.P.Pavlova metro stations; night trams N°51, 57 and 59 roll back down to the Old Town. Žižkov is a short walk towards the TV tower from JzP metro, or a short ride on trams N°5, 9 or 26. Stagger home on night trams N°55 or 58.

North of town, is a slightly scruffy area with a couple of good clubs, while up the hill to the east the more upmarket Letná is centred around Letenské náměstí with some cool bars. The Vltavská metro station lies at the edge of the area; otherwise trams N°3, 5, 8, 14 and 26 rumble north across the bridges. Get home on night trams N°51, 53 and 54.

Southwest of the Old Town and across the river, Smíchov and its central area of Anděl is a long disregarded semi-industrial area (with the huge and fabulous Staropramen brewery still in its midst), which has taken leaps and bounds towards becoming very pleasant indeed; countless bars cater to a young crowd. Anděl metro station is in the district’s heart; night trams N°54, 58 and 59 go home.

GENERAL

Food is often based on Austro-Hungarian dishes. Western-style fresh vegetables are often missing in lower-class restaurants. There is a wide selection of restaurants, beer taverns and wine cellars.

Prague is aptly named the city of a hundred spires, but to the gastronomically inclined it’s also known as the city of a thousand restaurants. Prague’s cosmopolitan character is reflected by her increasingly international and excellent cuisine, although there are still plenty of tourist traps.

The the Old Town & New Town are the well-touristed area between the Vltava River and busy Wilsonova Road, along in front of the National Museum. Malá Strana and the area around the castle, just across Charles Bridge, is a cleaner version of the Old Town, with many upmarket and tourist restaurants.

Loved by young expats, Vinohrady and neighbouring Žižkov have everything from cheap ethnic restaurants to trendy bars. North of the Old Town, Holešovice is a slightly scruffy area, while up the hill to the east the more upmarket Letna is centred around Letenské náměstí with some interesting restaurants and bars.

Smíchov and its central area of Anděl south of Malá Strana, is a long-disregarded industrial area which has taken leaps and bounds towards becoming a very pleasant area indeed, with countless restaurants catering to a young crowd.

National specialties

• (Wiener) Schnitzel and pork are very popular.

• Bramborak, a delicacy of a potato pancake filled with garlic and herbs.

• Prague ham.

• Meat dishes are mostly served with knedliky, a type of large dough dumpling, and zeli (sauerkraut).

National drinks

• Popular beverages include beers (lager, dark ales, pilsner), red, white and sparkling wines from Bohemia and Moravia, fruit juices and liqueurs.

• Particular specialties include becherovka (herb brandy) and two Moravian favourites, slivovice (plum brandy) and merunkovice (apricot brandy).

There are no rigid licensing hours.

Tipping: A 5 to 10 per cent tip is usual.
Posted: Fri May 18, 2007 6:29 am

SHOPPING IN CZECH REPUBLIC

General

Souvenirs include Bohemian glass and crystal, pottery, porcelain, wooden folk carvings, hand-embroidered clothing and food items. There are a number of excellent shops specialising in glass and crystal, while various associations of regional artists and craftspeople run their own retail outlets (pay in local currency). Other special purchases include pottery (particularly from Kolovec and Straznice); china ornaments and geyserstone carvings from Karlovy Vary; delicate lace and needle embroidery from many Moravian towns; and blood-red garnets and semi-precious stones from Bohemia.

The totally cheesy Czech Me Out T-shirts and communist slogans tend to hide a few quality items, such as Mucha, Kafka and others. Competition, even on Charles Bridge, means prices are fairly even, but the more tourist areas tend to have higher prices.

Shopping hours

Mon-Fri 0900-1800 Sat 0900-1200. Supermarkets and food shops in large towns and cities are open from 0700 and often stay open until late. The number of shops also open on Sunday is constantly increasing.

Banking hours

Generally Mon-Fri 0800-1800. Some banks close early on Fridays.

Currency

Koruna (CZK) or Crown = 100 haler. Notes are in denominations of CZK5000, 2000, 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50 and 20. Coins are in denominations of CZK50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20 and 10 hellers.

Currency exchange

Foreign currency (including travelers cheques) can be exchanged at all bank branches and at authorized exchange offices, main hotels and road border crossings.

Credit & debit cards

Major cards such as American Express, Diners Club, Discover, Visa, MasterCard and others may be used to exchange currency and are also accepted in some hotels, restaurants and shops. Check with your credit or debit card company for details of merchant acceptability and other services which may be available.

Traveller's cheques

These are widely accepted. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take travelers cheques in US Dollars, Euros or Pounds Sterling.

Currency restrictions

The import and export of local currency is limited to Kc200,000 or 10 golden coins. The import and export of foreign currency is unlimited.
