FOOD & DINING IN CZECH REPUBLIC
GENERAL
Food is often based on Austro-Hungarian dishes. Western-style fresh vegetables are often missing in lower-class restaurants. There is a wide selection of restaurants, beer taverns and wine cellars.
Prague is aptly named the city of a hundred spires, but to the gastronomically inclined it’s also known as the city of a thousand restaurants. Prague’s cosmopolitan character is reflected by her increasingly international and excellent cuisine, although there are still plenty of tourist traps.
The the Old Town & New Town are the well-touristed area between the Vltava River and busy Wilsonova Road, along in front of the National Museum. Malá Strana and the area around the castle, just across Charles Bridge, is a cleaner version of the Old Town, with many upmarket and tourist restaurants.
Loved by young expats, Vinohrady and neighbouring Žižkov have everything from cheap ethnic restaurants to trendy bars. North of the Old Town, Holešovice is a slightly scruffy area, while up the hill to the east the more upmarket Letna is centred around Letenské náměstí with some interesting restaurants and bars.
Smíchov and its central area of Anděl south of Malá Strana, is a long-disregarded industrial area which has taken leaps and bounds towards becoming a very pleasant area indeed, with countless restaurants catering to a young crowd.
National specialties
• (Wiener) Schnitzel and pork are very popular.
• Bramborak, a delicacy of a potato pancake filled with garlic and herbs.
• Prague ham.
• Meat dishes are mostly served with knedliky, a type of large dough dumpling, and zeli (sauerkraut).
National drinks
• Popular beverages include beers (lager, dark ales, pilsner), red, white and sparkling wines from Bohemia and Moravia, fruit juices and liqueurs.
• Particular specialties include becherovka (herb brandy) and two Moravian favourites, slivovice (plum brandy) and merunkovice (apricot brandy).
There are no rigid licensing hours.
Tipping: A 5 to 10 per cent tip is usual.
