WORK IN CROATIA
The Croatian economy has emerged from a mild recession at the turn of the millennium with tourism the main factor for improvement, but high unemployment remains the principal negative factor. Damage to infrastructure during the war has also made economic development difficult, as have coalition politics and trade union insistence on strict employment protection. However, the economic growth rate has been high since 2000, standing at 3.7% in 2004.
Service industries, especially tourism, account for over 60% of gross domestic product. Croatia’s rich cultural and historical heritage and its attractive coastline and islands attracted over ten million visitors in 2004.
The unemployment rate is high at around 13.8% in 2004, and with a high standard of education and vocational training, opportunities for immigrant workers are thought to be scarce. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is one of the few opportunities for EU nationals to find work in Croatia. Approach language schools directly if you are interested in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL).
Some opportunities may exist for voluntary experience in conservation and work with refugees. |
