I'm not aware of any tango community in Dubrovnik, but on the other side of the border with Montenegro, in Herceg Novi, we organise Tango events and festivals.

If you're in Dubrovnik and want to dance tango check if there's anything on in Herceg Novi.

FOOD & DINING IN CROATIA

GENERAL

Some say that eating is a Croatian sport and Zagreb is full of places to practice, although the range of cuisine choices is narrow because most restaurants offer nearly identical bills of fare. Expect to find menus heavy with grilled meat and fish, Italian pastas and risottos, and a few traditional Croatian dishes. Other ethnic cuisines (except for Croatian and Italian) are thinly represented, and only a handful of the better restaurants are adventuresome enough to experiment with unusual sauces and preparations. Pizzerias are the most common type of casual dining spot around the city centre, and Croatian pizza is remarkably good and inexpensive. For snacks, many bakeries sell pizza by the slice as well as meat- and-cheese filled burek (filled phyllo "Hot Pockets"), baguette sandwiches, and other filled doughy treats that work as quick meals. For sweets, the city's cafes and slasticarnicas (ice-cream/pastry shops) provide indulgent treats in a dizzying array of types and flavours.

National specialties

• Much Croatian food contains cheese and oil, often mixed with other ingredients in pies or 'donuts'.

• The Adriatic coast is renowned for its variety of seafood dishes, including scampi, prstaci (shellfish) and brodet (mixed fish stewed with rice), all cooked in olive oil and served with vegetables.

• In the interior, visitors should sample manistra od bobica (beans and fresh maize soup).

National drinks

• The regional wines are good.

• Italian espresso is also popular and cheap.

Tipping: 10 per cent is expected in restaurants.

SHOPPING IN CROATIA

General

Traditional handicrafts like embroidery, woodcarvings and ceramics make good souvenirs. Tourists can reclaim VAT on expenditure of more than K500. Visitors should ensure that all receipts are retained after any purchase is made, as financial police have the power to fine visitors without relevant documents. This is to prevent VAT evasion by shopkeepers.

Croatians love to shop, and large, Western-style malls are springing up all over Zagreb. Kaptol Centre on Nova Ves in Gornji Grad houses upscale retailers; a multiplex cinema; and an excellent assortment of cafes, restaurants and bars. Importanne runs two malls, one under the park across the street from the main train station, and another at Iblerov Trg just west of the city centre. Branimir Centre on Branimir just east of the train station also has a multiplex plus several decent restaurants, in addition to shops and the Arcotel Allegra Hotel. King Cross at Jankomir southwest of Zagreb -- the closest thing to an American mall -- has nearly 100 stores that include brand-name retailers like Benetton, Sisley and Esprit, plus electronics, sporting goods, and home stores. There are also lots of cafes and a huge Ipercoop hipertrgovina (supermarket) here.

Shopping hours

Mon-Fri 0800-2000, Sat 0800-1400/1500. Some shops in cities may now open on Sundays.

Banking hours

Mon-Fri 0700-1900, Sat 0700-1300. Some banks may open on Sundays in larger cities.

Currency

Kuna (HRK) = 100 Lipa. Notes are in denominations of HRK1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of HRK25, 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 lipa.

Currency exchange

Foreign currency can be exchanged in banks, by authorized dealers and post offices. ATMs are widespread.

Credit & debit cards

American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted. Check with your credit or debit card company for details of merchant acceptability and other facilities which may be available.

Traveller's cheques

To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in US Dollars, Pounds Sterling or Euros.

Currency restrictions

The import and export of local currency is limited to K15,000 (in banknotes up to K500). The import and export of foreign currency is unlimited but it is compulsory to declare in writing the amounts that exceed the value equivalent to K40,000.
