Good luck Scammal! I'm not sure there is anbody in Croatia to reply to you! I have done so much research on the internet but having moved to Cyprus from doing the same sort of investigating I now realise just how important it is to get views from people who have actually made the move that have similar circumstances to your own. With hindsight I may not have even come to Cyprus ... I certainly would have taken some sort of long term rental first instead of buying.
Would love to know your reasons for chosing Croatia ... and what, if any, your experiences of the country.
whatever ... I wish you the best of luck wherever you go!
Just looking for new horizons. I want to relocate to someplace nice, with more favourable weather and more favourable economic conditions.
I've lived most my life in Ireland and I'm sick of the place; rain, misery, incompetance and worst of all, enourmous expense.
So I'm currently looking into a number of places to set up shop afresh, a new venture - tourist related - but far from the boorish yobs of package-holiday hell that you'd find in Spain and elsewhere. Someone suggested Croatia to me recently and I looked into it, someplace like Split or Dubrovnik would suit perfect. I've a couple of years left here I'd say, before I've achieved what needs to be achieved here business-wise so I'm using that time actively seeking information on my new getaway.
All things going well we'll be able to subsidise our new life with income from back home. Euros just seem to flitter away on the most pointless things. Groceries, bills, entertainment - gone, all gone, especially if you like to drink. Euros ain't worth sfa in Ireland, but I'd imagine you'd get far more bang for your eurobucks in Croatia. Though I could be wrong, which is why I'm asking.
HIYA MATE, JUST CAME ACROSS THIS SITE AND MAYBE I CAN GIVE YOU A FEW POINTERS. IVE JUST CAME BACK FROM CROATIA (DUBROVNIK). IVE BEEN LOOKING INTO THE IDEA OF MOVING THERE TOO, ONLY THING IS I HAVE NO MONEY TO SET ANYTHING UP THERE!! THE LURE OF GOOD WEATHER AND DIFFERENT WAY OF LIFE ATTRACTS ME!!! CROATIA BASICALLY REALIES ON TOURISM, THERE ARE VERY FEW JOBS AND UNEMPLOYMENT IS VERY HIGH, SO YOU WOULD HAVE TO SET UP A TOURISM BUSINESS VENTURE. IN DUBROVNIK THERE ARE A LOT OF ROOMS TO RENT BY LOCAL PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE AN EXTRA FEW EURO. LAND IS VERY EXPENSIVE IN DUBROVNIK AND ALSO, MOST PROBABLY SPLIT. WHEN I WAS THERE I MET A MAN WHO HAD SPENT 4 MILLION EURO ON HIS VILLA AND IT ONLY HAS 9 APARTMENTS. OK, THIS IS THE EXTREME BUT YOU GET THE POINT. PLACES LIKE CAVTAT AND POREC ARE CHEAPER THAN DUBROVNIK AND MANY PEOPLE ARE BUILDING APARTMENTS THERE.. UP THE OTHER END AT PULA, TOURISM IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE POPULAR AS MORE AIRLINES ARE STARTING TO FLY THERE. IM NOT SURE IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUY LAND THEN BUILD OR TO BUY AN APARTMENT BLOCK ALREADY DONE BUT, THERE ARE A LOT OF FOREIGN INVESTERS THERE AND YOU MIGHT HAVE A STRUGGLE TO FIND SOMETHING SUITABLE.
EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. I HAVE A FEW CONTACTS THERE SO I MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP..
Bog! I am a New Yorker moving to Rijeka in October. Over the past 6 months I have been researching Croatia & searching for a forum like this.
Cost of living –I live in one of the most expensive counties in the States & I would say that Dubrovnik would be as expensive if not more expensive. It is the undisputed most expensive place to live in Croatia.
Outside of the major tourist towns Croatia has more then its share of opportunity for small scale foreign investment. The region of Istria is a prime market for investment. That is best explained in this New York Times article on Istria : go to google search and type in: CROATIA & TUSCANY
In my opinion Croatia has more potential than another country in the next 10 years. Its rapid ascension into the EU along with its strong education system, western minded new generation, physical beautify, geographic position, low crime-rate, tourist industry & culture will attract large scale foreign investment. A good comparison to Croatia’s future is to look at Ireland’s or Slovenia’s economic rise over the past 10 years. If planning to make the move to Croatia, now is the time.

HI TOMMY, CAN I ASK, WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING FOR WORK IN CROATIA? ALSO, BY THE LOOKS OF IT, RIJEKA IS A GOOD PLACE TO INVEST AS THERE IS A POSSIBILTY OF WINTER HOLIDAYS AS WELL AS SUMMER WITH THE MOUNTIANS NEARBY...
I want to open up a specialty coffee Espresso Bar. One that is very different to your typical cafe in Croatia.
That sounds like a good idea. What with tourism getting stronger and more westerners travelling there you could be onto a winner with that one. Just wish i could do something like that!!!! Do you have a business in NY???

Was just wondering what the cost of living is like?
What woudl the average cost be for utilities, groceries, accomodation, fuel, insurance, etc.
Scammal - what part of Croatia are you heading to? I'm looking to do the "disappearing act" myself and so far, everything's coming up realistic when i look at the demographics and country stats.
Found some great info on the CIA's website of all places.

Dazza230 - Looking into heading over to Croatia myself - will secure a long-term rental initially till I get the "lay of the land"
Anyway, couldn't help noticing you had contacts there in Croatia? What areas might they be able to assist a Yank wanting to come over?
I anticipate starting up some type enterprise catering to the burgeoning tourism the coastal resort towns are enjoying. Please email me any info I might find useful and certainly the contact info for the gents you left behind in Croatia. I'll buy 'em a pint or two in your name!
