Studying in Shanghai, Shanghai University Living

Living on Campus

It is a great way to meet other foreign students. It can be very inexpensive if you are willing to share your room and privacy. However, it is not that cheap and comfortable if you take a single room. Prices also usually vary whether you are short or long term student.

Here is a general example:

Standard Shared Double Room
RMB¥45/day/person (approx.US$6)for long-term student,
RMB¥80 (approx.US$10) for short-term student.

Ordinary Shared Double Room
RMB¥35/day/person (approx.US$5)for long-term student,
RMB¥60/day/person (approx.US$8)for short-term student.

Single Room
RMB¥70/day (approx.US$9) for long-term student,
RMB¥120/day (approx.US$15) for short-term student.

Each room is usually equipped with colour TV, direct-dial telephone, air conditioner and sometimes internet connection. Additional facilities include bath, kitchen, and fridge for public use.

TIP :
Living on campus amongst other foreign and chinese students can be a very interesting experience. However, you should carefully calculate your budget: it can be cheaper and more comfortable for you to rent a place with some friends and share the rent. Usually, shared rooms are quiet small and bathrooms are common for each floor.

MAJOR UNIVERSITIES IN SHANGHAI

Fudan University
280 Zhengtong Road
Tel: 6564-2222 Foreign Affairs Office: 6511-7628
Fax: 6564-1875.
Website: www.fudan.edu.cn

Obviously the biggest, and probably the best university to study at: with nice living conditions, and a several different programs. The biggest drawback is that the campus is located about 40 minutes north of Shanghai. But of course, the students create their own social life in the area.

JiaoTong University
1954 Huashan Road 200030.
Tel: 5474-0000 Foreign Affairs Office: 6293-2276
Fax: 6486-5577
Website: www.ae-sjtu.net/ltc/

This university is well-kept, and well-funded. Its location is ideal, minutes from the booming shopping center of Xujiahui.

Shanghai International Studies University
550 Dalian Road West.
Tel: 6531-1900 Foreign Affairs Office: 6536-0599
Fax: 6542-0225.
Website:

Another in the northern university ghetto. Apart from the usual Chinese language classes, they have an undergraduate course aimed specifically at foreign students which combines Chinese language and trade and economics.

Shanghai Normal University
100 Guilin Road 200234
Tel: Foreign Affairs Office: 6432-2824
Fax: 6433-9150.
Website: www.shtu.edu.cn

Its location is not very convenient, located very south of Shanghai. Like a lot of the university courses, in the after noon they offer Taichi, Erhu and calligraphy classes.

Shanghai University
149 Yanchang Road, 200072.
Tel: 6613-1999 Foreign Affairs Office: 5633-1820
Fax: 5663-5364

Website: www.shu.edu.cn

Actually less well-known than the name would lead you to believe, and situated way out west, pretty far from anything. The school is home to Shanghai's only Fine Arts Institute, but it is way out in the new campus (huge open spaces and buildings that have a kind of hospital atmosphere).

Tongji University
1239 Siping Road, 200092.
Tel: 6598-2200 Foreign Affairs Office: 6598-3611

Website: www.tongji.edu.cn

Another "big name" university, not far from Fudan.

Donghua University

1882 West Yan'an Road

TEL: 62373678 Foreign Affairs Office: 62373798

Website: www.dhu.edu.cn

It is a “small” university compared to the other ones. However, it has a nice and renovated campus, close to the metro.

East China Normal University

3663 North Zhongshan Road

TEL: 6223 3333 Foreign Affairs Office: 6223-2013

It has one of the largest campus in Shanghai, located west of Shanghai, not far from the subway.

East China University of Politics and Law
1575 Wan Han Du Road
TEL: 6251 2497

Website: www.chinainterlaw.org

For those keen to study politics and law in Chinese, this place has some excellent courses, but you'll need to discuss it with them personally. They also offer a summer course to certain American law schools, in English, attended by Harvard and Yale students.

Shanghai Conservatory of Music
209 Fenyang Road 200031
Tel: Foreign Affairs Office: 6471-9492,
Fax: 6437-0137

Website: www.shcmusic.edu.cn

Beautifully located in the heart of Old Shanghai.
