Getting closer to me moving to the big Sino-big smoke and was wondering if there are many Russian eateries in Beijing. Was hoping for some good Siberski Pilminy (sp) and some Souljenka (sool-yenk-a).

Anyone know of any good places to find food like this?

Cheers.

As many Russians come to Beijing for trade it is not hard to find a Russian restaurant.
My office is in Kuntai Plaze in Chao Yang Men street and at the back of my office there are a lot of shops exporting to Russia and also a lot of Russian restaurants.

Just take a taxi and tell him to take you to Kuntai Royal Hotel and at the back of the hotel you will find many of them. Area is also know as embassy area.

There is indeed no problem to find Russian restaurants in Beijing. Here are a few options that I cut and pasted from the That's Beijing Directory

The Elephant
大笨象
Description Good place to stuff your face and get drunk without the pretension of uppity, hyper-designed restaurants. Good Russian food, especially the appetizers, like stuffed mushroom caps. The floorshow was akin to Eastern Bloc Lakers’ girls wriggling out to Shakira. Russian

Address In a small alley off Yabaolu (50 meters north of Yatai Dasha), Chaoyang District
朝阳区朝外头条甲93号(雅宝路亚太大厦向北50米)
Phone 8561 4073
Hours Daily noon-4am

Kiev
基辅餐厅
Description Stars of Ukraine’s opera scene have somehow ended up performing at Kiev restaurant. They saunter among the tables dressed in military uniforms, belting out everything from Italian arias to Russian folk songs. You can request your favorites for RMB 50 a pop. The boozy vodka kebabs and the indulgent Kiev pudding– which really is a rich cheesecake – come highly recommended. Russian

Address 13 Puhui Nanli, Yuyuantan Nanlu (west of the Millenium Monument), Haidian District
海淀区玉渊潭南路普惠南里13号
Phone 6828 3482, 6827 7309
Hours Daily 11am-11pm

Little Birch Western Restaurant
小白樺
Description The anti-Elephant – good Russian cuisine without the Yabao Lu glitz. With its clean diner feel, it’s an ideal place for a quiet dinner with your comrades, or dining alone with Anna Karenina. Russian

Address 24 Fuchengmenwai Dajie, 1/F, Jingbin Hotel, Xicheng District
西城区阜成门外大街24号京滨饭店1层
Phone 6858 2233 ext 1666
Hours Daily 11am-11pm

Moscow Restaurant
莫斯科餐厅
Description This one-time ballroom is grand, epic even, with soaring ceilings and oh-so-Soviet pillars. Moscow opened back in 1954, and was Beijing’s first foreign restaurant. Though the atmosphere recalls Tolstoy, the food is a little more Gulag Archipelago but the Stolichnaya is reasonably priced at 8 kuai per ounce. Russian

Address 135 Xizhimenwai Dajie, in Beijing Exhibition Center, Xicheng District
西城区西直门外大街135号北展中心内
Phone 6835 4454
Hours Daily 11am-2pm, 5-9pm

Traktirr
老井俄式餐厅
Description Pick the right time (lunch, early dinner) and you’ll understand why so many Russian families are loyal patrons. Who can argue with hearty portions of well-priced kid-friendly fare like chicken Kiev, steaks, pork schnitzel and mashed potatoes? Thanks to the heavy mayo application, even the salads make it down most kids’ throats. Family Dining

This perennially packed restaurant survives on word-of-mouth and reputation alone, and it’s not difficult to see why. There’s the rustic, homey decor, but it’s really the affordable prices that make Traktirr a winner. Russian

Address 1A Xiyangguan Hutong, Beizhong Jie, Dongzhimennei Dajie, Dongcheng District
东城区东直门内大街北中街西羊管胡同甲1号
Phone 6403 1896 ext 108
Hours Daily 11.30am-10.30pm

Traktirr Pushkin
Description Just around the corner from the other Traktirr, this one's easier to find: it actually has a sign out front. It's also a little bit swankier, and the menu adds refined touches to a cuisine not known for its subtlety. Don't miss the pickled cherry tomatoes and RMB 20 Russian beer. Russian

Address 5-10 Dongzhimennei Dajie, Dongcheng District
东城区东直门内大街5-10号
Phone 8407 8158
Hours Daily 11am-midnight

White Nights
白夜西餐
Description The food at White Nights, which remains true to the spirit of Mother Russia. Get your ruble’s worth with succulent peppercorn beef tenderloin accompanied by a working man’s serving of creamy mashed potato. The service however, could induce discontent among the masses. Russian

Address 13A Beizhong Jie (off Dongzhimennei Dajie), Dongcheng District
东城区东直门内大街北中街甲13号
Phone 8402 9595
Hours Daily 10.30am-midnight
