BRUNEI TRAVEL TIPS


Visa

isas Visas are not required for these countries if the visits are up to:

• 14 days
Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand and the Republic of the Maldives.

• 30 days
British, Malaysian and Singaporean

• 90 days
US

• Others
Citizens of all other nationalities inclusive of British overseas citizens and citizens of British dependent territories must obtain a visa to enter Brunei. Transit passengers will get a 72-hour visa.

Customs

Visitors over the age of 17 may have the below duty-free allowances:

• 200 cigarettes or
• 250g of tobacco
• 60ml of perfume and 250ml of toilet water

For non-Muslims, they may import two bottles of liquor and 12 cans or beers. It must be declared upon arrival though. Like certain countries, possession of drugs carries the death penalty.

Currency

Brunei's official currency is known as the Brunei dollar (B$). It comes in the following denomination: 1c, 5c, 20c and 50c coins, and B$1, B$5, B$10, B$50, B$100, B$500, B$1000 and B$10,000 notes. Singapore dollars are used and accepted as well.

Electricity

You won't have any problems with electricity supplies and they run at 220-240V AC, 50 cycles. Plugs are of the Malaysian and Singaporean variety, the three square-pins.

Business Hours

Business hours are as follows:

• Government Offices - Open daily from 7:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Close on Friday and Sunday).

• Private Offices - Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

• Shops - Most shops in the central area are opened around 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Shopping Malls - They are opened from about 10 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. or 10 p.m. Hours are shorter during the Ramadan month.
