FOOD & DINING IN BELARUS

GENERAL

Eating out in Minsk is no longer the outright horror that it once was. There now seems to be two kinds of restaurants: those that get it, and those that don’t. Generally the newer restaurants are the ones to go for, as they understand that a combination of a fun atmosphere, good food and friendly service is the ticket to success in the tucker industry. Shabby old dumps, however, still persist in offering mediocre food and surly service among what are rapidly becoming novelty Soviet surroundings. Such places are almost worth it for a laugh.

Be aware that pretty much all restaurants list garnishes (such as chips, vegetables, rice, little blobs of butter to go on your bread and so on) as separate items, and the cost of these can quickly add up. Also be aware of entertainment. It’s generally excruciatingly awful and can turn dinner into torture. Eat early, say before 20:00, to avoid the acts and whatever you do, don’t drink locally produced soft drinks. They will make you explode from both ends.

Beer and vodka can be bought round the clock from all-night kiosks and food shops. Coffee is generally available with meals and in cafes, although standards vary.

National specialties

• Belarusian borshch, a soup made with beetroot, is served hot with sour cream.

• Other excellent specialties are filet à la Minsk and Minsk cutlet.

• Regional cooking is often based on potatoes with mushrooms and berries as favourite side dishes.

• Local dishes well worth trying are dracheny, a tasty potato dish with mushrooms, and draniki which is served with pickled berries.

• Mochanka is a thick soup mixed with lard accompanied by hot pancakes.

National drinks

• Beloveszhskaya Bitters are made from over 100 different herbs and have an interesting flavour.

• A favourite drink is chai (black tea).

Tipping: 10 per cent is usual. In some hotels in Minsk and other cities a 10 to 15 per cent service charge is added to the bill.
