PostPosted: Tue May 11, 2004 1:56 am    Post subject: Shipping personal effects back to Malaysia - Custom forms? Reply with quote

Hi! I'm a Malaysian citizen that's been working abroad for almost 10 years. Am currently planning to relocate back to Malaysia sometime later this year.

Question about shipping my personal effects back. I found a service that allows me to ship packed boxes of my personal effects back for a rather decent price. HOWEVER - they do not handle customs clearance for me in Malaysia. I have to handle that myself. (The reason why I'm thinking about using them is because I don't have enuf stuff to fill a container and am only planning to ship things back that I can fit into a box).

So, I have friends that told me there's no customs tax on used personal belongings. Is this true? What type of documents do I need to prepare when my family picks up my items in Malaysia? What type of info is needed on the packing slip?

If I need a customs agent in Malaysia - how do I find one? I can't seem to get a good online list of customs agent.

Thanks - I appreciate any help I can get on this.

I have the same question and same problem here that the shipping company that I found does not include clearing custom procedure. I would like to know how much a custom agent will cost me in malaysia?

I just moved here two months ago. In my experience the shipping company does not cover customs procedures or monies but will inform you if anything comes up. In general, they do not charge anything for personal effects unless brand new, high end products. Make sure to have a receipt of electronic or such items. hand over the list of items with amounts alongside and the copies of the bill of lading. Everything else should be fine. You wont require a customs agent. And no forwarding agent will want to work with you from this side. The experience as you can see is still fresh in my mind.

Check out the web site of Asian Tigers; they claim they clear customs and door-door service. Hope this helps Smile

That's great to know - thanks.

One more follow-up question - does Malaysian customs open all the boxes for all shipments?

I've prepared a packing list of all the items I have, but it's only as detailed as :

Books - 10 units, value - $XX (used)

Is that sufficient? Will they open all boxes and actually check the packing list to the contents of the boxes? Thanks.

I am a Malaysian citizen but have been living in Hong Kong for the last 2 years for work reasons. Recently I have been relocated back to KL, and I sent my LC TV that I have used for over a year back to KL. The Malaysian customs want to tax me more than 30% of the cost of the TV. This does not sound reasonable, if anyone has any advice, would appreciate as I plan to make an appeal to customs department.

Thanks !

From my understanding any used electronics that you've owned with valid receipts are tax free. As for books and tapes, the M'sian customs are very stringent and sometimes it's not worth sending them as they might charge you for the time spent to review them!

Hope info.helps Smile

Recently found AlliedPickfords and Crown have offices in KL and Pg too. Will clear customs and door to door delivery. Their quotes are a lot better than Asian Tigers.
