Hi June,
I haven`t built a house on Bali but on Lombok and that was an adventure, I can tell you that.
First of all, forigners can NOT own land orproperty in Indonesia. You must have an Indonesian sponsor, that means everything will be in the name of the sponsor. If you are not 100% sure it`s a reliable person you shouldn`t do it. If you are married to an Indonesianor planning to do sothe property will be in his name. A prenuptial agreement is a must and it`s set up by a lawer. If you get as far as starting to build you must see to thatyousign a contract with the buildersotherwise you will get problems. We had family building our house and even if I knew them well, they dissapered from the buildingsite after 2 weeks and we had to hire new people to continue. My husband is Indonesian and he was at the site everyday overlooking and supervising otherwise I don`t understand how it would have ended. It`s not possible to think that you can just give the builders a drawing and then expect your house to get nice and ready. Be very very carefull. I know people who has gotten into big trouble by trusting locals they didn`t knewso well. The money gone, the land and the house in the hands of the sponsor and there is NOTHING you can do about it. This is sounding hard and it can certanly be like that.

Hi
I really do not agree I have had no problems what soever
I ordered my house from a Architekt I made a contract with him which states
he gets part payment for each step of the building we
sighned a contract at the local Notaris also we made a care taker contract with a local. the caretaker is on the certificate but restricted by contract
I can change my caretaker when ever i want to.
I did this 5 years ago in the west then sold my house and now I have built in the North, I have started to rent out the property this year and have
3 months booking. All this was done mainly from here in Germany.
I have a very good manager who takes care of things the main point here is to treat the locals fair which enables them to make a living as well
as you furfilling your dream.
Now I am thinking about buying some beach land and building a Villa there
